A 4-wheel drive vehicle comes in handy for navigating unpaved roads in this still mostly wild area, particularly during the rainy season. Though locals zip around on quad bikes and motorcycles transporting their surfboards. Allow the better part of a day driving from San Jose Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to Mal Pais. Budget extra time to board the car ferry from Puntarenas across the Golfo de Nicoya to Paquera on the Peninsula de Nicoya. Or take the short flight from San Jose to Tambor Airport (TMU), and be within an hour of Mal Pais. Some Mal Pais beaches have little sand, and judging point break direction and swell size requires surfing acumen. A Mal Pais surf camp may be perfect for family members wanting to learn to read the surf better. Santa Teresa’s beaches have more white sand, and point breaks like Suck Rock are almost legendary among surfers flocking here when the seas around Playa Carmen get too rough. Playa Carmen has enough variety to accommodate all levels of surfers, but the swells can get too rough and too frequent to get out during the rainy season. A bit to the north, with waters calmed by a rock jetty, Playa Manzanillo is known for its annual sand castle competition.

This was a great spot to enjoy some Costa Rican craft beer in a relaxing atmosphere. The bartenders were friendly. Make sure to go during Taco Tuesday and stay for the love music. Also, ask them about the Created En Costa Rica hats and shirts - a surf brand exclusive to this shop.

Great service, prices are fair for the quality of the food (which is quite nice!) Beautiful views, great background music! The place itself is quite welcoming and relaxing. The best that i have had on the way from SJ to Jaco/Hermosa. Recommended!

This sports bar was open for the Women's World Cup final at 9:00 am on a Sunday, so I was happy! They have a good selection of international beers, a great-looking menu (cheaper too than most of the restaurants downtown), and an excellent sound system with TVs throughout the bar. The friendly bartenders and atmosphere made me feel immediately at home.

This restaurant was the first time in Costa Rica that we fully enjoyed our meal from start to finish! The food was excellent! Highly recommend the butternut squash soup, my husband loved the fish, and we both enjoyed the Mexican style churros. The service was amazing with the servers all going above and beyond what they needed to in order to make sure everything was perfect! Edward even gave us some fun facts about Costa Rica and treated us like family. We ate a few appetizers at other restaurants and then ran back to this one because no other place could compare!

I stopped here for a beer after walking round the very pleasant town center. Itâs a small place with a great chilled vibe, helped by some cool background music. I chose an excellent pale ale from the extensive beer menu. Not cheap but a pleasant change from Imperial!

Our large group was very pleased with our dinner at this location. While there were a few glitches, we were all very satisfied with our selections. I would return just to sample the seafood soup and ceviche again. Delicious! The garlic fries and ribs were also standouts. The service was great, considering there were 17 of us, and it was a fun evening.

One of the staff at the Hotel suggested this place, we got there in rain waiter came after a while with some kind of an attitude, we placed our order which was Hamburgers without any cheese or Ham, after about half hour our order came, it had both Ham and cheese when we pointed this out that we don't eat this. Waiter reaction was strange, on this we decided to just pay and get out. This was the only incident we encountered in our trip to CR people are lovely and friendly

Restaurante de lucia is a bit off the well traveled tourist road but definitely worth the short way on a dirt road. It is a quiet lovely, uncluttered dining room and our waiter was just the right amount attentive, available but not hover-y. However, what brings me to writing this review is that they have the best fish tacos I have ever eaten. Generous servings of pan fried to perfection, very fresh fish.
