Brasserie l'Express

A really busy restaurant that offers great service and excellent food. We opted for the homemade burgers with proper chips, not frozen frites which many restaurants serve. The Brasserie l'express is situated on the square and is busy and bustling at lunchtime.Ideally situated with tables under umbrella and tree shade which is great. Our waiter was so attentive with a smile. Service was spot on, and we would definetely return if we are ever visiting Cognac again.

We had organised a visit to Cognac to attend a Cognac master class which was not expected to finish until 13:00 and finished nearer 13:30. We then had a 30-minute drive from the domain in the Grande Champagne production area, back into the centre of the town of Cognac for a late lunch. Normally this would not be a restaurant that we would normally plan to dine at, but we had chosen this restaurant because it had flexible opening hours. Also, pictures and reviews here on TA indicated to us that quality and choice of food from a buffet-type service was good. This is a Brasserie restaurant: a type of restaurant with a relaxed setting, which serves single dishes and other meals. It is located in a multi-store hypermarket development run by E.Leclerc. On arrival it was very busy, with most of the people there being on their work lunch-break, but we quickly found a table and a waitress came to take our order. We did not find the glorious buffet-style display of food-stuffs that is pictured here on TA, these pictures are simply not representative of the reality. The salad bar was quite small and not at all well-stocked with the diverse assiettes of prepared dishes as shown in the pictures. There was no buffet-style service and if it had ever been available, it had not been restocked. All dishes seem to be prepared in the kitchen and brought to tables by waiting staff. The pictures here on TA do not indicate this and IMHO should be removed as unrepresentative. My partner ordered a sea-food salad which was served in a large dish with a crisp salad and smoked salmon and prawns plus tinned-tuna. Two goat’s cheese filo parcels were put on the top of the salad, they were pleasantly warm and crisp but were very rich and filling. A side of fries were also included but were not expected or particularly wanted. To be fair the salad was good and there was plenty of good ingredients.I didn’t fancy a salad so I ordered a beef-burger and fries (I had been prepared to select from the buffet and was disappointed by its absence). Again, my meal looked reasonably good on arrival. Yes, the fries were in clumps and looked a bit greasy. They were however only just warm and I refused to eat them. My partner’s fries were considerably warmer, and as she did not really want them, I dumped mine onto a serviette, and my partner gave me her fries. These were also clumped together and were not really very satisfactory. Too many fries cooked at one time causing the oil to lose temperature was almost certainly the reason for this problem. The burger however looked excellent – it was slightly charred and was an irregular shape, indicating to me something a bit more up-market than a perfectly round patty would have suggested. Nothing of the like my replacement burger was dry as a bone and, like the chips, barely warm. At his point I called the waitress over and had my meal replaced.Sadly, my replacement meal arrived after only a few minutes wait: which indicated to me that the fries and burgers were cooked in advance and had been kept warm. Probably too many meals had been prepared for the lunch-time rush and, as a consequence, I was being served food which was not freshly cooked and therefore sub-standard. The fries were warmer, certainly not hot and just about passable, but they were still in clumps. The burger was warmer but still very dry and not a pleasure to eat.I ate my meal but I did not enjoy it. To be brutal it was rubbish, not worth the money, and should have been far better. My partner had a coffee but that was not at all good, it was hot but it did not have the wonderful rich and slightly bitter flavour of good French coffee. The staff all worked hard and were pleasant enough.Monsieur et Cher Client,Je vous adresse la présente faisant suite à la réclamation que vous nous avez adressée. 5th visit in as many years, with both large 10+ parties including kids and today just my friend who lives here and myself. Food and service has always been great. This is the best dish I've had but our party has had pastas, pizzas, salads and burgers which have all been good too. Suprised at some comments on here, which is why I am writing this review.

We first visited this bar last year when it had only just opened. The Chef Sommelier is clearly knowledgeable the bar has modern decor with laid-back ambience. This year, we can report that they serve a good Champagne and a beautiful boutique-house XO cognac. We plan to visit the vineyard to take some home!

We were here for lunch with a big group, so I’m sure there is a difference between what we received as a set lunch and items one might order off the menu. Our lunch was some type of stuffed chicken and potatoes which were only average and certainly not something the restaurant should be proud of serving. The real star here was the creme brûlée dessert....skip the entree and go straight to dessert !

Right near the Martell building, (which is worth a visit btw, 5th floor bar} the little restaurant on the corner, quite small inside but excellent food here. We had duck in a lovely sauce and delicious mash, quite simple food but very nicely cooked. The wine was good too. Great service from very friendly staff, reasonably priced. There was a comment I read by someone complaining the toilet entrance was straight into restaurant, abosolute tosh, ignore the silly comment. I used the bathroom was tucked away at the back and to the side! Thanks!!

Even though it was a Saturday it also happened to be a public holiday, so everything, shops included was shut lunchtime. Options were limited. A troublesome encounter at a tourist café meant we were very stuck for ideas but Tripadvisor suggested the Astoria. And what a great little find it was. To look at from the outside it looks a bit like a pub, but as it was open we settled for a table outside. The staff were extremely friendly and helped with all the allergens, the food only helped to defy the initial look of the place. As others have mentioned the food was slightly hit and miss. The starters were exceptional, worthy of any restaurant, but the main dishes of confit duck were a touch heavy going, plentiful but needing a little more finesse. The desserts scored highly with the children. All in all deserving of custom, next time I would just choose different mains.
