Sari Ponti Restaurant

This is a stand alone building with two floors of restaurants. Downstairs is more for the general public. Upstairs quieter and for more corporate dinners. The place looks like a proper chinese restaurant with fans everywhere, different sorts of lights everywhere, Chinese lanterns and a TV that is always on. As a result, companies tend to come here for dinner and therefore the corresponding higher price.
There is a wide selection of choice. Maybe more gimicky - they have a hot plate section and all the dishes come on a hotplate with stilts. We ordered the kangkong hotplate with garlic which was nice but a bit oily. Mee goreng was also good but Indonesian style so it's fried with sweet sauce. The dishes were however largely oily and forgettable.

Kahyangan Seafood and Chinese Restaurant

Supposedly the best Chinese restaurant in Berau. At the entrance before you go into the restaurant, there is open air kitchen by the road. When you enter the Resturant, it is bright and tables line the room and benches. At night, the environment is nice, breezy and clean although I am not sure whether it would be too hot during lunch.
The menu is in Indonesian with no prices on the side. We ordered a few vegetable dishes and a lot of seafood. A lot of the repertoire is fried but when you taste each dish, it has a different taste. The chicken is free-range which is why it doesn't seem to have any fat. The prawns was delicious because of the batter it was fried in. The fish was caught fresh from from the river that runs through the town. We saw the owner eating his dinner. Since he caught us eyeing his food, he gave us the fried fish he had originally kept for himself. All in all, it was a good meal.

If you are bored of Indonesian food and looking for some International food then this place is not it. The menu is primarily Indonesian / Chinese food with some fancy plating to make it look western. They do have a couple of salads. Luckily they also provide the menu from the lobby which has dishes like chicken chop, cordon bleu, beef steak etc.
Even though I was the only one in the restaurant, I think I had to wait 30 min for my food- at least it's cooked fresh.
Having said that the food looked great when it came. I ordered the cordon bleu. Not world class but delicious nonetheless even if it was a bit Asian style. Nice and clean environment. Relaxing music after a tiring day. What's there not to like?

Pondok Pasundan Derizca

The surrounding area seems to be undergoing construction with an empty piece of land directly opposite the restaurant. This restaurant looks like a hut made with dark wood/bamboo. Once inside it's a bright area and because it is covered with dark bamboo the area is actually very cooling. There is a buffet with more than 30 dishes - what a wonderful spread. There are different types of vegetables, fish curry, chicken, otak, many different types of soup etc. We could really pick our fill. The food was good but a bit cold. The Seating is square tables with benches and of course a TV. The lady boss very friendly.
The people I came with said its a lunch time restaurant, not really for dinner.

Padang Kuring Restaurant

This restaurant is housed in a small building but when we came in, it was quite a big area and seems popular with the locals. However, the place doesn't seem as clean as some of the places we had been. The food had also been pre-cooked and kept in a small room where the service staff were smoking in.
This place serves Nasi Padang - Indonesian food. When we arrived, they just started bringing plates and plates of food. We must have had more than 25 dishes - probably more seafood and meat than vegetables. Naturally the food was a little cold. Some of the more interesting dishes would be the dish of beef brain. My favourite dish was the fish done otak style.

The cafe is by the river along many other cafes. This is a bit of a hole in the wall but this is where the locals come for their breakfast. We ordered the acheh coffee which is quite strong. There is also a kue which is like the rice dumplings with gula and dessicated coconut. The rice dumplings was pretty good.

Podo Tresno

This restaurant is located in a shophouse and the kitchen right in front.
So after a few days of eating Indonesian food which can be oily and sweet, we will looking for somewhere a little less heavy food. This place was recommended for its fish soup - the fish is cooked in clear soup with the traditional sweet and sour taste that is Indonesian. It comes with rice and we could also order a myriad of dishes such as vegetables and fried fish. Absolutely delicious.
