L'Ajoupa

Reviewed By Caroline P

I often eat at l'Ajoupa because it is close to my home and I always forget to write a review. But this week they outdid themselves so this write up is overdue. Over the years, the restaurant has proved its consistency. The food is always good and the service is always great. This week I went to dinner for my birthday. As a starter I chose the cooked tomato salad, a light and delicious way to start my meal. My son had Taitian fish as he always does and it is consistently good. As a main course I really enjoyed the tuna medley with a carpaccio sampling, a seasoned raw tuna cake and a small, cooked tuna steak with foie gras. My son chose tuna mi-cuit. For dessert I had a creme brulée which came with a candle and sparkler and the staff singing happy birthday. Every time I go to Ajoupa I enjoy unpretentious, well prepared, well presented. It is consistently good. Suits all budgets. You can spend a fortune or eat well from a reasonably priced menu. There are 4 set menus, and a good wine list. Eric, the maitre de la salle, makes good cocktails. Chef Jolly and team succeed in the kitchen. Eric, Christelle and their team make you feel welcome and are particularly attentive. The restaurant is set on the Caribbean Sea, in a secluded and quiet valley.

We stopped for lunch while visiting the artisanal shops. We were seated at 12:30 and received our first food at 2:05. Both my duck and my husband’s beef were totally unseasoned. Our server was very pleasant but very rushed. Dessert sorbet that came with the duck was wonderful. We didn’t want to risk ordering dessert or,coffee. Price was fair and location pretty.

Sunday night and not many options for dinner. This place came highly recommended by our fabulous B&B hostess..Without reservations it would have taken hours to get a table, so we opted to sit at the bar, and that elevated our experience to ‘very good’. It was fun to watch and interact with others.Everyone seemed to be having sweet potato frites (fries) so we started with them, followed by Tataki (perfectly cooked tuna – with sesame, and raw on the inside), and Marlin tartare, which was outstanding (maybe because you need to be in a place where it is fished).I don’t think we needed to tip, but we did, as everyone was working hard and very polite.

Le Petit Tonneau

Reviewed By FilsProdigue

How did an authentic Portuguese restaurant finds it way to Martinique? Go figure! But its the real deal. Tucked away on the Avenue Frantz Fanon near the Bellevue Catholic Church; this eatery delivers. Not fancy by U.S. standards; it is clean, it offers an air conditioned dining room and agreeable staff. Maria, the Portuguese owner, has a winning smile and golden touch. Her Petite Tonneau offers a welcomed break from the monotonous Caribbean cuisine. Escargots, Frog legs, Duck, Kidneys, steaks and so much more. I'm all about the escargots. They are as good as what you might find at Paris' Chez Eux --- wonderful butter and garlic sauce to sop up with bread. My favorite main dish is the "Bacalhau A Gomes De Sa" or Salt Cod, Onions and Potatoes. Its really a very hearty meal that is quite unique (and I'm not crazy about fish).Salt cod has been produced for at least 500 years, since the time of the European discoveries of the New World. Before refrigeration, there was a need to preserve the cod; drying and salting are ancient techniques to preserve nutrients and the process makes the cod tastier. Maria tells me that they have to soak the fish for at least 48 hours and change the water out at least 4 times. The dish is served with caramelized onions, diced baked potatoes in a delicious glaze and the wonderful cod in an indescribable sauce. They also have a wonderful Portuguese dessert you must order at the beginning of the meal. I can't remember its name. Its terrific! Its a good value for what you get; try it, I think you'll love it.

Villa Factory

Reviewed By ZRoyer

My experience at the Villa Factory unfortunately was quite unpleasant. The food was tasteless and the service poor. I ordered something that was out of stock but the kitchen did not think it necessary to let me choose something else off the menu. They simply served me an alternative. Service was long in coming and when we needed something we could not get the attention of the waiter although there were only two other couples in the restaurant. We actually had to get up and go to the kitchen area to call out for service at one point as no one was coming to our table. When service did come, the waiter was curt to the point of being impolite, and quite unprofessional. When we asked for a slice of lime for the very bland fish in papillote, he informed, no argued with us that the fish did not take lime. I was quite taken aback by his aloof attitude. A classy restaurant should not mean condescending staff. Needless to say, we never went back and I have never recommended this restaurant.

Le Patio

If you are reading this in English you are probably from the U.S. If your culinary frame of reference is the U.S. this is an average meal for what it costs.Vis a vis Martinique; it probably rates a Very Good. Part of it is air conditioned, decor is O.K., menu is large and food is good --- prices are high and service (like all of Martinique) is very slow and almost begrudging. Its really a tragedy that leaders in Martinique fail to see that its people are (aside from costs) the greatest obstacle to being an attractive tourist destination. It must teach a service culture that is compatible with international expectations. It begins by teaching the difference between service and servitude.

Restaurant hidden in a villa on Route de Didier. Looking like a family trattoria. Often packed with regulars. In the long dining room the wooden bar, portait photos on the yellow walls, black and white checkered tiles create a charming outdated atmosphere.Pleasant to taste traditional Italian specialties like a Spritz as aperitif, octopus salad, fagottini, Emiliana tagliatelle, zucchini and tomato linguine, gnocchi al gorgonzola, a glass of Lambrusco. Friendly and efficient service, decent prices. La bella vita.

...if you are in the front sea in Schoelcher, it's hard to reconise the restaurant: no pannel light, no signe outside. But when you come inside you find finnaly a very good and smart restaurant. Ida, the chef (and the boss) she is a italian girl and she propose a traditional HANDMADE fresh pasta: tagliatelle, ravioli, gnocchi! Another big force is the fresh fish: ok, easy in a restaurant in a Carribbean island but for me was the first time i see a real live fresh clams ready to cook!!! So, you can choise the table inside or outside, nice ambient and very professional and gently staff. And the kitchen close at 22.00!
