We were a couple who looked for a nice place to stay during our stay @ La Fortuna, while traveling "on budget". When we found this place we were a little hesitant because of the price which was above the average in the area, but it turned out to be A GREAT DEAL! It is a hotel, so everything is CLEAN and the STAFF are KIND. The fact that it is not located on the main road means you have to walk 3-4 min in order to get to the center, but it is SUPER CLOSE to everything in town, so we didn't have to rent a car! It also means that the area is SUPER QUITE. The BREAKFAST IS GOOD. In addition, there is a SECURITY GUARD @ NIGHT. And last but not least, THE VIEW IS AWESOME! (You can see for yourself in the picture I uploaded, which was taken from the room's private porch). You can see the Arenal from some of the rooms and from the hotel's pool. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We loved everything about the Roca Negra. Location: 2km outside of La Fortuna. All activities very easily accessible by car. Selection of restaurants and shops within walking distance. Very nice warm welcome and familiar feeling with staff. Room was huge, very private, quiet and spotlessly clean. Self contained patio/garden area with spectacular view of the Volcano (room 12). Beautiful, well maintained, spacious gardens, lots of wildlife to observe. Clean and inviting pool area. Use of well equiped general kitchen, free fresh eggs and coffee. Nice seating areas for breakfast. Can’t recommend highly enough. Exceptional value for money.

This was meant to be a Workstation Holiday for my daughter who was staying at Selena and had brought her Toy Sheppard dog. We were planning on keeping the dog on days that she was busy. This did not occur as we found out that 6 weeks to our departure that the Hotels policy was changed to not allow pets in the room. A big disappointment. If not for this incident I would have given a 5 star rating. The accommodation were clean, In room amenities included a safe, coffee maker and fridge. Free cookies was a nice touch. Missing was a Microwave. Having one room key was another odd occurrence. The breakfast at Acacia Restaurant was exceptional. Fabian our server was friendly and accommodating. The Typical Breakfast was accompanied with juice and coffee. Having extra plantain was not a problem. Coffee refills was always welcome. On early tours we could order early. Tours were enjoyable. We had the perfect weather. Met fellow Traveller's from the US, UK , EU and Canada.

Amazing experience from beginning to end

Reviewed By ginkybiloba

My daughter and I booked this last minute to recover from our hike the previous day. We were warmly greeted by a lovely lady who thoroughly explained the facilities. We chose to have lunch there, which ended up being a great idea (more on that later). The facilities are absolutely beautiful, and while they may not be as large as Tabacon or Baldi, I found that they were quieter and more enjoyable. We arrived shortly after they opened at 11:00 and nearly had the entire place to ourselves. The change rooms and washrooms were very clean, with private showers. The pools are gorgeous with all sorts of hidden grottos with smaller pools. There is a swim up bar with some very talented bartenders. We had a delicious 3-course lunch, with the most amazing pumpkin soup I have ever tasted. It was like velvet. For the price we paid for the day, it was an unbelievable value. It was truly a highlight of our trip.

Friendly staff and great location

The staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and accommodating. There is a pool and a shared kitchen for hotel guests to use. The kitchen has a hob, toaster, kettle and all utensils to cook with. We found the location ideal as it was surrounded by restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, and a 5 minute walk from the sloth trail. Reception can organise you taxis to where you need to go and they were good value. The room was clean and clean towels and cleaning was offered each day. We did not get around to using them but they offer peddle bike for free at the hotel, a small gym, and books and games to use.

AMAZING FIND!

We had booked a house through Airbnb. There were too many of us for the house, so we went around the corner to XILOPALO, what a find! This place was so artsy. It was so clean. Our rooms, 34 and 35 looked out at the volcano. The beds were clean, the room was large and came with coffee and a refrigerator. The A/C Worked great. The bathroom was large and clean. I cannot believe that breakfast actually came with the cost per night for the room! The staff was friendly and delivered dinner to our Room if we did not feel like going to the beautiful dining room. This place is truly a gem. We could walk into town and come back to where it was quiet. The man that took care of the grounds and fed the birds took us on a night walk where we saw frogs and other creatures of the night. The staff set us up with the best priced tours and fun guides. We highly recommend

Come here to truly experience the beautiful rain forests and volcano view. The cabin is clean and comfortable with a view of the volcano - very private (no views of other guests on the patio despite being a few cabins at this lodge). The complimentary breakfast is delicious and it’s right next door (few steps away) from Mistico Park! The drive up from the exit off the main road is stunning as well (see last 2 photos). 100% recommend!

Dream Destination!

We really can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was! But I will do my best to capture the highlights. The room was beautiful and private. It was the perfect retreat after a day of adventures in and around La Fortuna. Relaxing in the jacuzzi while looking out into the jungle was a picture perfect ending to our days. We also spent a portion of our stay in villa B3, which offered breathtaking views of the volcano, along with every other amenity you could want. Having our daily breakfast outside in our villa's veranda overlooking the grounds and volcano was the perfect way to start our days. Our rooms were always impeccably cleaned with personalized touches making us feel special during our trip. Also, having air conditioned rooms made all the difference after our long hikes on hot days! The grounds are beautiful, full of the sights and sounds that you can only experience in the heart of Costa Rica. And it was just a few minutes drive to down town LaFortuna, full of delicious restaurants and shops. Freshly cooked breakfast was delivered to our rooms daily by a very kind, friendly man who was always had a smile on his face. And breakfast was always delicious! We also ate at their restaurant, Yellow Tree, several nights and the food/presentation was some of the best we had while in Costa Rica, just a few steps from our room. Our host David was the most kind, attentive, and welcoming person we could have ever hoped for. Exceeding all of our expectations, offering suggestions, and making us feel so welcome. He created a truly one of a kind destination and experience in a beautiful location. David is the definition of "going above and beyond." We met him as strangers in a different country, and left feeling like we had a new friend. If and when we visit Costa Rica again, there is no chance we will stay anywhere other than Hotel Brisas Arenal. If you stay anywhere else, you are truly missing out!

Solo-Female Yoga Traveler Finds a Magic Mountain Retreat

Reviewed By KGpoolsandwifi

There are as many ways to review Essence as there are reasons that people come here. First I want to give special recognition to few people in order of impact: Juan Carlos, Aurelio, and Coletane. Juan Carlos contracts through his brother to drive for the resort. I basically got a 3.5 hour priceless tour guide from the moment I hit Costa Rican soil until we got to the resort. I felt so at home immediately and his information was priceless. His English was unbelievable. You can ask for him, but there is no guarantee unfortunately. If I were the resort, I would hire him full time to ferry my guests and welcome them in – he sets the tone that well. Aurelio works part-time a few days a week doing the Cacao-Jungle Tour, the morning bird-watching tour, and the night jungle tour. His knowledge, passion, mastery of English, and his complete total dedication to his work is something one should experience no matter what. He is the Indiana Jones of Arenal and you will want to find yourself swinging from the jungle vines with him, savoring the fruits of the lands, and shelling your fresh cacao seeds for your very own luscious chocolate. If you are heading to Essence, ask ahead to see if you can align with one of his tours and do not miss it for anything. Coletane works part-time running the spa circuit, ionic cleanse, and will also invite people on jungle walks amongst other things. She is passionate about Essence, healing, and everything there is to do about making your stay memorable. Her hugs and shares were beautiful and she enriched my stay with her love. I would like to also thank Jairo the manager, Lena the behind-the-scenes scheduler, Nicola and Jovanny front desk coverage, and Marvin and his engaged kitchen staff. They welcome you with open arms. My purpose in going was a solo-female 10-day yoga retreat and cleanse and to check out the option for a leadership retreat for my business. A beautiful group vibe occurred wth other single female retreat travels and based on other repeat travelers, the magic of a beautiful cohort forming is very common. There are others that come there for touristic reasons and brief stays for the national park, termales, sloths, zip lines, and waterfalls in nearby La Fortuna. The area attracts Europeans and Canadians more than Americans but there is a mix. This is not a great place for advanced yoga classes. Not that the teachers cannot teach them- they can. But because there is invariably a few first-timers passing through or some travelers new to their practice. They must safely accommodate and teach an all-levels class. Just be aware and do not blame them for serving the more common attendee. Solo female travels – you can come here safely and be at peace. This is one of the few places that has managed to figure out a way to do a rolling yoga retreat successfully. I needed that flexibility of no exact date start and stop. I have my business to run and found I could work four hours a day in peace. The wifi is good but shared amongst all guests and some were doing video calls successfully. However, I feel if I had to zoom or teams I would be at the mercy of other remote workers that come here. Luckily, I did not need that but it is worth noting that video calls might be tough. We did good with electricity but after I left I was told there were some days it went out for five hours. One priceless thing I had was a travel fan. The strong prevailing breeze is helpful in the mid-day heat if you are outside but inside, if you are like me, I need a fan. Get one with a rechargeable battery backup and that will continue running with the electric out. Another positive note. I got about as many mosquito bites as I would on a summer night outdoors with the Great Lakes. Totally doable and pleasant with light bug repellant There were some powerful things that happened, deep soul-level engagement. Incredible stay.
