Restaurante El Escribano

This excellent cafe/restaurant is situated in the Plaza de Santa Maria square right next to The Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor. It is also close to the entrance to the Alcazaba fortress too which is well worth a visit as apart from its rich history it also affords fantastic views over Antequera and across the plains beyond.
The Meson Restaurante EL Escribano is typical of local eateries in the area. However it does above average, food, the service is quick and friendly and is not too expensive.
We often walk down to this spot when we are driving in from El Torcal and sit under the parasols enjoying an espresso or a lemonade. In the evening it's a great place for dinner as we can testify.
To get there if travelling from El Torcal or Villanueva de la Concepcion turn off to the right on the Calle de Jesus. This is I think the first right turn as the town becomes visible. There is free parking a few hundred yards down on the left. A short walk from here are a number of cafes and tourist spots worth stopping at. Meson Restaurante El Escribano is a ten minute walk from the car park.
Of course you can also choose to walk down into the town itself from here. If you are nervous of driving through Antequera's narrow streets then this is a sensible option. Walking back though is all uphill!
Meson Restaurante El Escribano is a great place for food or drink and we can thoroughly recommend it.

Few places given the opportunity to eat in the bullring, on the sand that have trod large as Curro Romero or Jose Tomas and in which the bull has left its mark heavy. Doing so at dusk while tasting the traditional dishes of Antequera, with a soundtrack composed by the voices of Morente and Camaron and the Vicente Amigo guitars may prove to be a gastronomic experience?.Which could well have become a mere tourist attraction has been transformed into a point of reference in the city and all thanks to the variety and quality of their products. Restorer from 16 years, partner in the bullfighter Francisco Rivera, Inmaculada Jiménez took the reins of restaurant next to a team that worthy are to assess their efforts and sacrifices, to catapult to which today is, without doubt, one of the best, and famous restaurants within and outside the national territory. If for some tastes the traditional cuisine can be boring, the Menu of the restaurant Plaza de Toros la Espuela gives you a change in his presentation in a menu. The inner dining crimson shielding the tables of the diners among small archs decorated with pictures and tables of thematic bullfighting and flamenco. Also corners, dedicated to the great figures of bullfighting that have passed by the house, as Curro Romero, Rafael de Paula, Antonio Chenel Antonete, Enrique Ponce, Francisco Rivera, The Cordobes, the Maestro Manzanares, among other?.In a city whose gastronomic history has not been drawn throughout the match possible, the extensive and complete charter of the restaurant Plaza de Toros la Espuela summarizes the culinary tradition of Antequera and part of the Andalusia and Spain. For those who do not need more that good raw material, but who like to enjoy places with solera, for them, the Plaza de Toros de Antequera left their doors open?.

This is a wonderful opportunity to dine in the old bullring. High expectations in this most special of locations. Quite a varied menu including some special dishes of the area and Spain. However meal didnt quite live up to expectations and service was rather mixed. So- rated at the lower end of very good! Pity-lost opportunity- it could have been very special.

This place is a wonder. First the finca, all white with a chapel on the site offers a charming Andalucía atmosphere. The Terrace is welcoming. Inside you discover a place full of tradition offering local food of absolutely top quality and very very copious. Better be hungry... However only for a drink the restaurant would be worth a visit.

Stopped early evening in November as it was one of few places open. Had a selection of good tapas here and a few glasses of wine. Pleasant, efficient staff and attractive, tasty food. My one criticism is that the wine was a bit casually served; Rioja way too cold to enjoy.

Loved the area: the restaurant is located on the beautiful small plaza a bit further away from the city center and closer to the Alcazaba. Decent variety of tapas to try for a very reasonable price. We liked aubergine tapas and guacamole with nachos ones....MoreThank you very much, it is very kind!!

Good home cooking in a friendly atmosphere with a great price / quality ratio. A few minutes Infante Street, Alameda, Castilla Square and Bullring.

Although FC Barcelona was playing, and all the local guests and the bartender could hardly get their eyes from the tv, the service was immaculate. The food was very fresh, half rations looked like full ones. The house wine was very decent (could you get a bad house wine in Spain anyways?-hey, I'm from Amsterdam!) and the prices are good. If I would be living here, I'd not write this review and keep this great place to myself, it shouldn't become touristy!

Have passed this small bar many times but today decided to give this non tourist place a go. Bar area crowded, with most of the few tables in the place marked as "reservado" so, rather than leave having made the effort, we had no option but to join the locals and eat/drink standing in a quiet corner. The range and quality of the tapas and wine made up for the inconvenience and goes some way to explaining the obvious popularity of the place. Lunch time clearly is hectic, will visit again but will make it evening next time. Recommended.

Great beer and tapas place, order one tapa with each drink as you go on. The montaditos, lomo, merluza and little house specials are great compliment a very cold beer. The place is nearly always buzzing with locals - don't be intimidated if you can't speak Spanish...

I have reviewed this place before, and this review is to confirm that it maintains exceptionally high standards of food and service. I thoroughly recommend the multi-course 'tasting menu', a marvellous series of dishes, thoughtfully chosen and accompanied by some very appropriate wines (served in decent quantity - may not be so good for drivers !!). Value for money is very good indeed: I recall EUR20 for the menu with no wine or EUR25 with wines. The tables are nicely set with good quality linens and glasses, and nicely spaced. Service is attentive without being overbearing. Thoroughly recommended (if you don't know Antequera, take a map !)
