Targoviste city, the old capital of Valahia, is a town with a rich culture and history placed in the southern of Romania at 80 km. from Bucharest. Symbol of the old fortress of Targoviste, “Chindia” Tower (“the Sunset Tower”) was build in the second reign time of Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler).

You can explore the ruins and go up the tower for a great view of the surrounding city and a look down at the Princely Court. They were continuing the excavation and upgrades while we were there; it's good to see places being kept up. The church was also nicely restored and good to visit.

The small church looks beautiful from the top of the tower and equally impressive on the inside. The walls are covered in amazing portraits and other paintings. Despite the small size of the church there are plenty of decorations including a grand chandelier. Restoration work is in progress to restore the interior and repair the masonry work however you still get a great impression of how grand the church would have been when it was in use.

Located in Targoviste City, around 80 km from the capital is an old Military Barracks where the former Romanian leader and his wife were taken, tried and executed on Christmas day in 1989.
Four days earlier he had attempted to speak from the Parliament buildings in Bucharest and inform the people he had persecuted for so long that things would improve in January. He was not believed and as matters went out of his control down blow in the square, Ceausescu and his wife escaped in a military helicopter. During the flight the pilot was informed the military had joined the revolutionaries, he then landed at the barracks in Targovista handing over his charges to the army. Their life of sheer luxury moved to a small drab room where they were imprisoned until their show trial on Christmas morning. It lasted less than an hour and led to their execution by firing squad. The barracks in question, well at least the four or so rooms and the execution site are now a museum staffed by English speaking volunteers. Maybe for some it will prove gruesome but in reality it provides both the Romanians and the foreign visitor to more understand the historic events at the end of the 1980's that was to effect such a major change in this beautiful and fascinating country.

This is a very interesting site of historical significance dating from the 14th century. It contains several buildings including a church and the Chindia tower. On the front of the church is a plaque that lists the rulers, their names and the dates of their rule. Among the names is Vlad Tepes, a ruler famous for defending Wallachia from the Turkish empire. His reputation far exceeds that in Romanian as well as world history.
The ruins are of the principle residence of the royal family. Unfortunately, its just the foundation and lower parts of the building that are left but you can walk through them. The Chindia tower you can climb to the top and imagine yourself looking out for the advancing Turks. If you're in the Targoviste area it's worth a look.

Attested as a princely court, Targoviste became well known under Mircea cel Batran, Dan II, Vlad Dracul and many other wallachian rulers. Here were taken important decisions by those rulers, Vlad III Draculea looses his life at Targoviste.
Being located at a relatively short distance from the Danube River, Targiviste was considered the first line to fight and oppose the ottomans. Close also by Transylvanian border Princely Court from Targoviste was considered the avanpost against the Turks by the Pope, Hungarian Kingdom and other states interested to defeat the High Gate.
Stop here for the visit dear traveler and you'll leave this place satisfied.

It is the first contact with you dear traveller when you reach the former capital of Wallachia coming from Bucharest. It is the first "Bastion" that kept the enemies outside the walls if they were coming with no peaceful thoughts.
And stands from middle ages as a real witness of Wallachia's (Romania's) history.
