Kennett Square is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is known as the Mushroom Capital of the World because mushroom farming in the region produces over a million pounds of mushrooms a day. To celebrate this heritage, Kennett Square has an annual Mushroom Festival, where the town shuts down to have a parade, tour mushroom farms, and buy and sell food and other goods. Longwood Gardens

In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

I wouldn't be the amateur gardener I am today without the experiences over many years visiting Longwood Gardens. The place gets better—and more popular—every year, but because there is so much to see, it rarely feels overcrowded. We're season members, so we go four or more times a year.

An interesting shop with everything focused on mushrooms. They had towels, books, soups, figurines, etc. all about mushrooms. There was a small display on mushroom growing, but it wasn't too informative. They also sell fresh mushroom. If you're visiting Kennett Square, it's worth stopping in.

We had a delightful afternoon walking around Kennett Square, hearing a little about local history, and stopping at various restaurants to sample their food. The variety of food was amazing, and included Italian, Mexican, sushi, crepes, Mediterranean, crepes, various ice creams, coffee samples, wine samples, a brewery and of course, the chance to sample some mushroom specialties. Each stop offered not only the food, but friendly smiles. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and went home stuffed. Also, Elle, our guide, was lots of fun.

The old home is renovated as a unique gift shop. They do sell fresh mushrooms including specialty types. They put in a large kitchen to do mushroom cooking demonstrations once a month. There is a shed with a free museum. They have video tapes of the entire process of mushroom farming. You could watch for 2 hours. This is more for adults since it is more technical. You can see a few samples of the specialty mushrooms growing in soil.I don't know of any other mushroom museum in Kennett Square. They have a website that will show you the free cooking classes.

Kennett Flash

The Kennett Flash is a fantastic to see a musical performance. It reminds me of the Main Point outside of Philadelphia from years ago. You are super close to the performance stage and acoustics are very intimate and engaging. They also have comedians perform as well as children's performances. Talent is drawn from local, regional, and national sources, and is a diverse line-up of musical styles. The other major advantage is that it is a BYOB and for $4 per person you can bring wine or beer (glasses are provided). Also food is served from La Verona and is very delicious and convenient since you do not have to leave the venue.

Ticket prices are reasonable as well....

In addition, they are a non-profit organization and their mission is to "enhance the quality of life for people of all ages, achieved through arts experiences for audiences, performing artists and students" [from their web site]
