Bujumbura (/ˌbuːdʒəmˈbʊərə/; French pronunciation: [byʒœ̃byʁa]), formerly Usumbura, is the capital, largest city, and main port of Burundi. I reached out to Augustine by email about touring the small but marvelous country of Burundi and we quickly arranged a short 3 day trip to Bujumbura and around the country. I inquired about home stays, hoping to take in some of the culture, and it turned out that although none had been arranged for, Augustin himself would be willing to house me for my stay! I took the bus in from Rwanda and met up with Augustin at the bus station, and as it was Easter, when we arrived at his home, I was invited to the celebration, complete with a roasted goat and plenty of lovely and friendly relatives. I was made to feel very much at home and experience the hospitality and geniality of Burundians. Over the next few days we took a tour around the city and the country. We visited a site that demonstrated traditional Burundian culture and tradition, and a history museum that covered pre-European invasion through the terrible time of genocide up to modern times. We saw a stone monument that marks the location of where the legendary Stanley and Livingstone camped. We walked up and down Bujumbura's beach where locals party and relax as though you are in California, and watched the famed drummers practice their craft. One positive legacy of the French occupation was an outstanding patisserie (pastry bakery) where I overindulged on ridiculously delicious ecclairs and treats and forgot I was in Burundi and not Paris. The next time I visit, I will have to arrange for tours in other countries, as Augustin also arranged for activities in neighboring countries.

This monument celebrates the supposed meeting point where the american journalist Henri Stanley finally met Dr. Livingstone in the middle of Africa, on the banks of the Tanganyka lake, which is now Burundi
Stanley started his search of Dr. Livingstone, from the West African coast in Congo, to finally find him there, while he was actually looking to find the source of the Nile river.
Actually he was not sure the man he met was Livingstone ; and upon meeting him he raised his hat and asked : "Dr. Livingstone I presume ? ? ", a call which would remain famous for ever..........

Musee Vivant

Reviewed By Gerrit B - Urk, The Netherlands

This place you can't really call a zoo like you might know from America or Europe with animals more or less living in their natural environment. Here the few animals, 1 cheetah, 3 monkey's , 6 crocodiles, some serpents and some birds, live in cages. The main attraction is to feed the predators life Guinea pigs or fruit to the monkey's. You can also pet a crocodile or hold a snake.
