Carolina Raptor Center

Talk a Walk on the Wild Side at Carolina Raptor Center What will you find on your walk around the 3/4 mile Raptor Trail? Over 30 species of raptors and other birds of prey are featured on this walk on the wild side. Owls and Vultures. Hawks and Eagles. Falcons, Corvids and other species that just don't fall into any of these categories. Have you seen a Bald Eagle up close? The Raptor Trail features a nesting pair of Bald Eagles who live out back in the Eagle Aviary. Our Spectacled Owl just can't wait to tell you what she thinks about living here at CRC, but you might have to listen carefully to what she has to say - she's a shy one. Did you know that Vultures and Corvids are some of the smartest birds around. No bird brains here! Lots of human mythology surrounds both of these families of avian brainiacs. Crows have been known to drop nuts into crosswalks so that cars can crack them and then wait for the light to change and retrieve the goodies! Behind the scenes at CRC is our Raptor Hospital, where we see approximately 900 raptor patients a year (please no songbirds or possums!). If you can't make our behind the scenes tour, don't worry, the exhibit "A Day in the Life of a Raptor Hospital" will show you what goes on there - day and night.

Great place to visit a lot of different birds who have been saved and cannot be released back into the wild. Every time I come there is a different event to see with these birds. One time the owls were tucking into their mice. This time the Golden Eagle was running around with his dinner in his claw and stomping around with it on the ground. My favorites will always be the vultures. Lots of vultures to see here. They are too cool! Lots of fun facts about the birds also make this a great fun and educational trip!

This place is really nice. The exhibits are very beautiful and well thought out. It was very busy when we were there, but we managed to be able to play in most areas. The restaurant and grocery stores were too packed out for my children to be able to play. But the brick factory was really cute. The children loved the real fire truck and boat and the submarine. It was a lot of fun.

Huntersville is a small town and Birkdale Village is a great place to spend time, see people, eat well and shop. It is an adorable mixed-use place pretty close to interstate 77 (exit 25) with great restaurants, stores and sidewalks (not too common in the city). On weekends many families spend time here walking around, doing some "people watching", eating, shopping and going to the movies.

I go often with my dogs to walk or run the trails. It is off the beaten path but free to walk trails. Very scenic around the lake. Has welcome center with real bathrooms and clean water. Also has raptor center, horse back riding, kayaking, picnic area (good for group events), fishing, and tour of old plantation (birds and plantation have a fee otherwise free). Quite nice and not very crowded. Definitely worth checking out. Plenty of parking lots and spaces beyond welcome center.

Historic Latta Plantation

This plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Latta Plantation is a great place to go to hear not only about Civil War but about the time before. The guides are extremely knowledgeable about not just the history but the architecture, furniture and art. It’s very comprehensive and they encourage all visitors to ask questions and engage in conversation rather than just running visitors through a rehearsed tour. The grounds are beautiful but it was a little too cold to walk them and I was there later in the day and they close at five so I didn’t have enough time to see everything. I plan on returning and would definitely recommend this for anyone at any age.

Really enjoyed the day seeing the sheepdog trials and doc dogs especially. We also toured the log cabin where there was a weaving demonstration and generally looked around the farm.
