Virupaksha Temple

Reviewed By camsean - Townsville, Australia

If you are visiting Pattadakal, I would strongly recommend that you save this temple for last. It is clearly the apogee of Chalukyan temple art and it will impress even the most jaded of temple-goers. This eighth century complex is the best-preserved of the Pattadakal monuments. Some of its carvings are remarkably crisp considering their tremendous age. The pillars, for example, are inset with sculptural reliefs of exceptional detail and beauty. Wherever you look you will find narrative panels, dwarapalas, beautiful plasters and carved festoons. The Nandi mandapa at this temple almost defies believe. The polished black Nandi is a stunning sight. The ringing bells and frequent pujas make it clear that this one is still an active place of worship. This all adds to its unique atmosphere. There is definitely a sense of the mystic which can be felt here.

The Kashiviahveshar Shiva Temple is a small, but highly decorated Shiva temple. Worth seeing for all the bas-relief and sculptures on the walls, sanctuary, columns and sanctum sanctorum. A small temple, but definitely worth seeing.

Galganatha Temple

Reviewed By macedonboy - Glasgow, United Kingdom

The Galagnatha Temple is a Shiva temple built by the Chalukya dynasty in the early 8th century. The temple area is fairly large, although about half of it is actually the forecourt of the temple. The temple is built in the North India Nagara style with the typical curved pyramidal roof over the sanctum sanctorum. An interesting feature of the temple is the prch and ambulatory that encircles three sides of the temple. The veranda on the roof of the ambulatory on two sides combined with the pyramidal roof gives a visual effect of a hat. Lots of bas-relief at the entrance and along the exterior walls to see such as sculptures of Shiva and Ganas, but the interiors is pretty bland in comparison.
