We absolutely loved our stay here. Our hosts could not have been more lovely or accommodating. We ate several times at the restaurant - I recommend the Pad Thai and the mango dessert! We borrowed bikes and took them into town and long the rice paddy trail and to the Khmer ruins. The room and the resort's interiors and design were lovely - very crisp, modern, and very clean. We enjoyed our room's patio and had a BeerLao while watching the sunset. Our hosts were able to book us tickets and get us a ride across the river to catch a bus to our next destination further south. Later, when I realized I had forgotten my iPad, they were kind enough to find it and mail it from Thailand! We highly recommend.

The River Resort

The River Resort is located on 400 meters of naturally landscaped Mekong River frontage in the south of Laos, close to the renowned Wat Phou UNESCO World Heritage site. The Resort's architecture and decor are contemporary Southeast Asian. 22 of its 28 guest rooms have stunningly beautiful, panoramic views of the Mekong River; and the other 6 have fine views of beautiful evergreen rice paddy, flowering trees and tranquil ponds. Each guest room has an indoor and an outdoor shower and other high-standard amenities. The Resort’s open-air Dining Sala, overlooking the Mekong, includes a restaurant offering Western and Laotian/Thai cuisine, alfresco dining on its Riverfront lawns, a cocktail/juice bar, and a rooftop lounge for private meetings. Two infinity swimming pools and the Resort’s onsite Spa complement a relaxing stay. Its two private Riverboats offer casual journeys on the Mekong and sunset cocktail cruises, including - when the Mekong is at ebb - spectacular sunsets viewed from a soft sand beach on a remarkable uninhabited, sandstone island offshore the Resort. The River Resort is an ecologically and environmentally responsible hotel, committed to the use of replenishable bamboo for most of its furniture, organic and hydroponic "farm to table" gardens, recycling of inorganic waste, composting of other waste, as well as solar heated hot water for its kitchens; and is also committed to the improvement of the education of its local staff and the livelihood of its local community.

Beautifully designed and in a perfect setting

The resort is set on a beautifully and carefully crafted block of land next to the Mekong and only a few minutes drive away from Champasak town. The resort is tastefully decorated and designed with maximum privacy in the 2 story villa setting (2 rooms per villa with separate entrances). The rooms are spacious and generates a feeling of calm and serenity. We stayed in the river facing rooms on a recent promotion which was had a 50% discount from standard room rates. Well worth the money and the view of the sunrise overlooking the Mekong from the comfort of our bed is remarkable and mesmerizing with full floor to ceiling windows. The vast amount of trees provide shade in the heat of Southern Laos and the cooling natural breeze that flows through the Mekong provides a surreal experience. This is definitely the place to relax and get away from it all. The only downfall is the water pressure - hardly any which made it difficult to shower and impossible to try out the outdoor shower. The rooms are very clean however, given the setting, there are of course lots of bugs around which didn't bother me at all. The breakfast was very solid from a more western focused a la carte menu. We didn't eat otherwise at the hotel. There are also two pools to choose from and lots of space for the kiddies to run around. At only 30 min drive away from Pakse city, I would definitely recommend this place as an alternative away from the hustle and bustle.

Laos adventures

My friend and I stayed here in November 2019 . It was recommended to me by some good friends who stayed here a couple of years ago. Sadly our experience was a very different one to theirs. We initially booked for 3 nights but when we got there which was early there was a problem with our room as the previous people had forgotten to leave the key with reception and had taken it with them , I thought it was strange they didn’t have a spare key and there seemed to be some stress between the owners and we felt slightly uncomfortable while they came up with a solution to the problem. So we headed off for a walk while it got sorted. We returned and they gave us a very nice room with lovely views and that was that . We tried the beds which were surprisingly uncomfortable and thought maybe we only needed 1 night after all. I was also concerned about the increased bush fires in Australia which were getting close to my family and thought it would be best if we moved a bit quicker to our next destination in case I might need to fly home early. We told staff at reception paid for one night and left for the afternoon and explored the temple nearby which was very impressive. We returned back paid for a very nice meal at the restaurant at Nakorn plus drinks which was nice. Got up had breakfast there as well paid for that as it’s not included and felt a very uncomfortable vibe between the staff. We were approached by the female owner in a very abrupt ,unpleasant and unprofessional manner and told us that she didn’t know of our plans to leave early and made it very clear she was not impressed! I said to my friend that I thought we should just leave and get out as I was very disturbed by the behaviour of her and the way she made her staff feel so uncomfortable. We packed up and headed off but my friend decided to go and try and sort the matter out while I found a Tuktuk. After a long while I started receiving messages from the owners husband demanding we pay extra money which I felt was not right since we had given them notice and had a valid reason for leaving earlier. Next thing I saw 2 police go inside and thought there might be a problem and found my friend bailed up with the female owner and a staff member filming her with 2 police trying to make out what the problem was I don’t think they thought much or the ridiculous reason to be called to.I was so disturbed by this turn of events and felt now we were trapped into paying an extra 2 nights as the owner said now the police need to be paid off ! So I felt we had no choice but to pay and leave as quickly as we could get out of that really beautiful place destroyed by very bad customer service and greedy behaviour from the owners! I felt very sorry for the staff as well because they were in trouble for not telling the owner the day before that we were going. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone!

Anouxsa Guesthouse

Good points but also challenging

Reviewed By sue_jewkes

We booked and paid for a river view balcony room - we didn't get this. After much discussion with the owner, we eventually took a back room with the promise of a free breakfast by way of compensation. The room was ok, but basic and tired. The room was clean and the a/c worked. The wet room was basic but there was hot water. The biggest problem was the bedding (which was old) and the bed and pillows (very hard). We had been travelling in Asia for 6 weeks and were used to hard beds, but this one was excruciating. The room was reasonably priced for the standard we received, but it could have been so much better with a bit more attention to detail. It is a good location next to the river - but a good 15 - 20 min walk to the main area. We rented local bikes and then this was fine. The owner was clearly a business man and was very money orientated the whole time we were there. Most days felt like a test to see what we would and wouldn't put up with. When we left, they tried to charge us for breakfast and said only the fruit was free (we argued and this then changed). Not much accommodation around Champasak - so this is probably ok - but be prepared to challenge!
