December 8, 2021 Rosalyn Ihle

Once a modest mining and ranching town, Ketchum is now a bustling resort town that became a popular ski destination with the settlement of nearby Sun Valley. Bald Mountain towers above the city and draws world class skiers every year. The surrounding wilderness provides a beautiful escape for hiking, trail riding, hunting and sports. Ernest Hemingway was known to have fallen in love with the valley and made his final home in Ketchum.

Sawtooth Wilderness Area

The 217,000 acres within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area include some 300 lakes, 40 wilderness trails and a forest of fir, spruce and pine.

Snow had fallen and remained on both sides of the highway, although the roads were plowed and safe. An Idaho senator proposed this as a national park in the 1930s, unfortunately conservative politicians stand in the way. It really deserves national park status.

Fisher Creek Trail

Winding through the foothills of the White Cloud Range, this scenic bike trail provides magnificent views of the Sawtooth Valley with a toboggan-like downhill return after the arduous climb.

Reviewed By jdkenyon

This is my favorite mountain bike look in the area and is a must ride at least once every year. The climb is up a gravel road that is very scenic with streams and mountains all around. Once hitting the top the single track starts and it is game on. The downhill feels like it never ends and is super fast and flowy. Don't let the big climb scare you off, it is worth it.

Ketchum Cemetery

Reviewed By E545MZdavidj - Rochester, United States

Quick and easy stop to see an American icon's final resting place (Ernest Hemingway) - along with some of his family. Plenty of parking - very small cemetery, so it's easy to find his gravesite. Worth 10 minutes while visiting Ketchum. Many visitors left gifts; coins, a fountain pen, and even an empty bottle of Havana Club Rum - for the author.
