Port Townsend Brewing

I love nothing more than visiting a small town and experiencing one of their local breweries. I know that Port Townsend Brewing would be one of my first stops and it did not disappoint. The waitress was incredibly friendly as she explained the menu (beer options) and told us how to write down our picks. They had a few guests taps on display so I got to try other local beers, from different areas of Washington, as well. My Mum and I shared five flight glasses and each beer packed a different punch! I love a brewery that gives you NO LIMITS on how many flights glasses you want ( I mean, there were a possible 16, but who would need that many at one time anyway!). I also love a brewery that lets you choose any beers they have on tap, as opposed to a set menu or a limited amount. Already with a good taste in my mouth from the positive brewery interaction, my mum and I were jazzed to sit outside in the sunshine. There was even a beer garden filled with bushes and flowers and I'm sure once evening time hits and live music is on display, the beer garden is the place to be! We really appreciated being outside, down at the docks, and sipping our flights. LOVE this brewery and this experience.

Propolis Brewing

Propolis Brewing~Seasonal Herbal Farmhouse Ales. Organic, Local & Wild-crafted. Propolis was established in June of 2012 with the sole intent to produce high-quality handcrafted herbal ales inspired by old world tradition, local resources and the rhythms of nature. Our ales are brewed with various wild-crafted herbs and are seasonally based. Many of our Ales blend several styles and are hard to classify by those that prescribe to the standards. We are primarily inspired by the farmhouse tradition of France and Belgium, as well as old world Ales that no longer exist. We are artists and scientists at heart and we aspire to challenge the norm. For thousands of years beer served as food and medicine; it had anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Old world ales were referred to as “gruits” and were created from various malted grains and bittering herbs. Proprietary herbal blends were passed down from generation to generation as was the knowledge of how each herb served to promote health throughout the year. We carefully selected local herbs and botanicals that bitter and flavor our ales. Our herbal blends are developed to harmonize with the spectrum of malt that shifts from light to dark with the sun and the harvest. The term “propolis” comes from two Greek words: “pro,” which means “before,” and “polis,” which means “city.” This ancient term came into being centuries ago when some early Greek student of Nature established the fact that honeybees use propolis to narrow the opening into their “cities,” or hives, to keep out unwelcome intruders. The term “Propolis” is a metaphor...a reference to a time long past. Propolis encourages us to look to our surroundings for inspiration and health. We strive towards managing a sustainable business. We source local and organic ingredients whenever possible and aim to work within the flow of the seasons as to promote others to find rhythm and balance within nature. We hand-craft all of our ales in extremely limited batches and seek the highest level of quality control as to ensure the most positive experience for our customers.

My wife and I were visiting various ports of call today: Port Gamble, Port Ludlow, Port Hadlock, and decided to make a return visit to Port Townsend. Our intention was to do the touristy thing and visit the shops downtown again. Didn't make it. We just happened to see a sign directing us to Port Townsend Vineyards and decided to give it a taste. Wine tasting had been on our minds anyway and here was a convenient opportunity. Was it ever. We enjoyed our visit so much that we never made it to the shops downtown. The tasting room's only been open for a year, which explains why we missed it on our last visit to P.T. But this was our lucky day because Cara was the tasting room host. She was friendly and engaging, and she knew the winery and the wines, which isn't always the case with tasting room hosts (I worked as one for five years a long while ago). I'm always interested in the details of how a wine is made, and about the winery itself. She answered every question I had. For different fees, you could choose to taste 3 wines or 7 wines (1oz. pours) or a flight of wines (3 oz. pours). We choose to taste 3 wines, and really liked two of them, an oaky WA state chardonnay, and an Oregon Pinot Noir. We bought a bottle of the pinot, it was amazing. We definitely plan to return, and we'd like to bring friends and family with us. And we sure hope we'd be lucky enough to pick a day when Cara's working the room. She helped make our visit fun, memorable, and educational which is the hallmark of a great tasting room host. Oh, concluding our ports of call tour, we drove through Port Madison on the way home.

Great old beer recipes from year of experimenting in their garages. Try the amber it is delicious. They make every beer better. I been buddies with Patrick for ever and did not know he brewed great beer until 5 years ago. If in Port Townsend, go on google map and hunt down their brewery. It is behind the Goodwill, back of the cul de sac. order a pizza from waterfront pizza and have it delivered at your table. It goes well with their ales.
