A Splendid Mystical Dreamscape in the Morning

I was told this is the resort to be in if ever in Samoeng. It’s like the star of this village and staying here means immersing yourself in the raw rustic Thai way of life. Yup, the intel was correct and I was so glad to have spent a night here. Though not on any of those more popular publicized routes that one may follow, it was well worth it and was like uncovering a hidden gem (for foreigners especially). Samoeng is a very small village lies in a valley surrounded by hills. There is only one seven eleven, one petrol station and a couple of very local eating joints. Can hardly find any shops opened after 8 pm. We arrived in the evening with the sun already behind the hills. Heavy cold air quickly blanketed the resort. Families took easy stroll among the squared section of paddy fields. I counted a few scarecrows that served more as subjects of photography then to scare birds away. A couple had a romantic time watching the skies turned dark on a platform which perturbed onto the pasture. Beers and ice bucket nearby, the stillness of the night slowly crept in as they chatted away in a world of their own. The warm tungsten of the few lodges scattered around the property broke the cold purple of the twilight. The dining area at Lhongkhao was not serving out any food, we went to a nearby eatery that was almost closing and had a quick simple local meal. We did also see many people going out early to buy bags of food in, and our guide told us GRAB Food works for this resort too. The eatery that soon closed is within walking distance from the resort, however being large family group, we did not choose to go by foot. Just past 8 pm, we made our way back to our lodge. It was constructed of aging timber which added to the antiquity and the rural vibes of the lodging. There was no TV, no fridge nor kettle. Simplistic and for one to enjoy the tranquility, I had no issues. The toilet was of naked cold cement walls, the water heater worked and build up warm mist as I showered. The lodge we had was a combination of two units. One which had two rooms and the other single. There are a variety of lodges here both big and small. The night was very quiet, we slept with opened windows which let in fresh and pleasant chilled air. The bed was of no hotel quality, but sufficient to serve a decent night of sleep. In the morning, heavy fog descended and enveloped the resort. It was dreamy with the entire landscape tainted a dull whitish green. The sun’s ray fought to break in. Many were already out abouts at 7 snapping pictures and taking in cold breaths of heavy air. The morning was however slightly tainted with the scent of burnt crops, and that’s the way of farm life every end of the year when it is dry. The paddy of Lhongkhao was void of crops, they had just recently harvested and were seeding a new batch. Nevertheless, the surrounding hills and the vast compound still made it scenic. It would have been perfect if I was here at the ripe time. The breakfast was simple, I saw the staffs brought in food by motorbikes. As with many resorts in the cool December north, the staple here is hot porridge. Boiled eggs were on the buffet, the steam bellowed from those pots. There was bread and jam, a few snacks here and there, and that all essential self-serviced jar of instant coffee. A quick packing of our bags and we were on to continue our road trip. It was just after 10 and many had already left the resort. The week we were here happened to be the coldest of the month, we were fortunate. It just made everything a lot more mystical and appealing. Words can only describe so much about this place. Seek the photos and let your eyes build the full picture. And be here in the cold months to embrace the full splendor this countryside resort has to offer. It will be magical.
