8 Things to Do in Wilkes-Barre That You Shouldn't Miss

December 23, 2017 Moriah Teneyck

Wilkes-Barre serves as the county seat for Luzerne County, an area containing not one, but four of Pennsylvania's State Parks. Whether its fishing in Frances Slocum State Park, whitewater rafting through Lehigh Gorge State Park, cross-country skiing across Nescopeck State Park, or exploring twenty-two waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park, there is something for every outdoors enthusiast. If the indoors is more your thing, the city is also home to the Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs casino.

We've seen many shows at the Kirby Center and I highly recommend it. It's beautiful inside and always clean and well maintained. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. Some seats you can see the stage better depending on the event you're attending but your experience there isn't ruined by any bad seating. We were fortunate enough to get front row seats for our favorite band a few years ago and if you ever have the chance to splurge to see your one favorite, DO IT! It was a once in a lifetime thing I'm glad we spent the extra money.

Went to a hockey game to watch WBS Penguins play. A nice sized venue with good seating from anywhere in the arena. Easy access to restrooms and food vendors. Parking is a bit unfriendly with all the menuvering around cones and lanes to come in and out.

We parked the car in the parking lot of Market Street Square for 3 usd and walked the bridge to the Kirby Park. The bridge was built between 1926 and 1929. Market Street Bridge was built as bridge over the Susquehanna River and it connects Wilkes-barre and Kingston. I added two pictures but they don't do justice.

Kirby Park is a great city park with a lot to offer. It has tennis courts, softball/baseball fields, a playground area, a pond, a fitness trail, walking paths, a running track, pavilions and volley ball courts etc... It's very large and there is plenty of room for all activities. I see people of all ages enjoying the park. There are tables and areas to picnic or have a gathering. They often have events like fireworks, festivals and music. There is a concession stand and a large parking lot.

What I saw appeared to be a rink that serves the community well. They had open hockey one night and public skating the next day. Hockey and skating lessons are available. A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins store is on site and run a kids hockey team.
