8 Things to Do in Punta de Mita That You Shouldn't Miss

October 6, 2017 Elouise Mccaul

Yearning for the laidback feel of a rural fishing village with white sand beaches, combined with the luxuries and mild year-round weather of the Mexican Riviera? Punta Mita has all this plus championship golf, diving, sport fishing, surfing, sailing, sea kayaking, whale watching, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, Jeep tours, and rainforest excursions. Walk into town for beachfront restaurant dining and Pacific Ocean sunsets. Kids can safely swim at Playa El Anclote, where the rock jetties calm the shallow waters near restaurant row. Surf El Anclote’s long slow waves. Or seek out those special surfing spots along the coast, like near Punta Sayulita. Enjoy kayaking. Take the family sailing. Tee off overlooking the breezy blue waters of the Pacific Ocean at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Pacifico Course, rated among the best in Latin America. Pacifico is renowned for its optional 19th hole, the “Tail of the Whale,” a 199-yard par-three where you tee off over the Pacific Ocean onto a large island green. The Bahia, another Nicklaus-designed championship course, has six ocean holes, and is lined by beach sands and gated resort properties controlling course access. The Bahia Banderas (Bay of Banderas) and north towards Sayulita is great for fishing and diving volcanic tunnels, or just watching whales, dolphins, turtles, and ocean birds. Snorkel color-splashed shallow reefs. Spend a day on a ponga, a motorized open-bow fishing boat in search of mahi-mahi (dorado), pugnacious pargo (big cubera snapper), Pacific sailfish, fighting roosterfish, yellowfin tuna, and bonita. From Islas Marietas and El Morro to La Corbetena and El Banco, the diving opportunities are numerous.

We noticed on their brochure that they provide a guided hike up to the top of the nearest peak. We decided to go, and couldn't be happier with our decision. Erick was our guide, and he was incredible. I have travelled all over the world, and he truly stands out as one the best I've ever had. His passion for (and knowledge of!) the community, the nature, the landscape, and the animals was fantastic. I would come back to Punta Mita PURELY to be able to hike with him again in new and different locations. You won't regret your time with Erick. Nor will you ever forget the views when you get to the top!
PS... it was about 90 minutes up and 60 minutes back down. I would call it moderately strenuous, but not bad at all.

Destiladeras Beach

Located between the cliffs of Punta del Burro, this beach is popular with sunbathers and surfers alike.

We’ve been to Destiladeras Beach twice over the past month, once with my wife and the second time with a large group of friends. It’s a beautiful beach and nothing else we’ve seen in the region compares to it. It’s not Caribbean white powder sand, but it’s the closest you will find to it around here. Also it’s not a super crowded beach which is a welcome change.
As has been mentioned in the past, 200 Pesos gets you a table & chairs with an umbrella for the day; good deal. You can bring your own food & beverages or order beachside service from the onsite restaurant.
The food from the restaurant was nothing to rave about, but was just fine on both of our visits. The service was also fast & friendly. We had different servers on each occasion and both were real characters!
Destiladeras Beach is a fabulous place to spend the day and recommend you check it out!

Punta de Mita...gorgeous! We went there for the day...we took a drive from Nuevo Vallarta. It was worth it! I think it has the most beautiful beach in Nayarit. We stopped to take pictures and had a few drinks at some bistro on the beach. Any bar/bistro is great...just have a drink...,and watch the view of this beautiful beach.

The Islands are beautiful, the birds plentiful, and the snorkeling wonderful. Also, if you're out in the bay at the right time of year (roughly December through March), there's a good chance you'll see plenty of humpback whales breaching and competing to mate.

Jane Maroni Organic Designs

Reviewed By AllysoninMexico - Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico

Spending an afternoon with Jane Maroni and Chris Nielsen at their Organic Design Studio near Punta Mita is an awe-inspiring experience. Their “eco-motion sculptures” are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. They are a combination of art, engineering and design and are made from things found in nature and repurposed. The organic shapes, gentle and fluid rotation, and the way these sculptures somehow remain perfectly balanced in mid-air is absolutely mesmerizing. I currently have 4 stunning mobiles displayed in my home, which help calm and inspire me every… single… day.

Excellent service in a clean, relaxing environment. Four of us went for the Facial and Massage. It was so relaxing and such a great experience we all went back for the 90-minute Quick Fix spa experience. Nothing less than fabulous. If you visiting La Cruz or staying at the Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills, it is definitely worth the stop. 90-minute massage for $35 -- amazing!

Thanks to my neighbours who live here full time for taking us there ... we had seen cars parked on the side of the road but never guessed that the path lead to such a cute beach.
