Hi Folks. There are only 2 roads into the 11,000,000 acre Wrangell St Elias National Park. Therefore, from, the ground, you don't see anything. So we went to the Gulkana Airport in Glennallen and chartered Alex the senior pilot. This guy flew 727s and 737s for Braniff Airways and Southern (CIA) Airways and has a million stories. But I digress.

We took off from the grass strip next to the paved one and turned East toward the park. The first thing we did was go over some of the mud volcanos for a real good look. We then proceeded further East to Mount Drum and went up and down the glaciers there; taking pictures everywhere. We also saw Dahl sheep in their summer range on the sides of the mountains. We then flew up over a 8800 foot saddle to view some pinnacles and out on to the Wrangell glacier.

Flying back to the strip (cement this time) we couldn't believe how many picture we each took.

You have got to do this. Regards, OldeBear

River Wrangellers

It was sad that Alaska Fish & Game shut down King Salmon fishing during our visit to Copper Center. We decided to go out with River Wrangellers any way, enjoying a beautiful float trip on the Klutina River. There was a possibility to catch some sockeye salmon, but we weren't focused on that. Sometimes you gotta take the hand you are dealt and make the best of it. My brother and I were glad we did. We'll hope for kings in 2017. Great crew and first rate customer service.

Our family booked a trip on Brandon's raft to fish for Kings. Successful trip for being late in the season. We all had lots of fun and Brandon is very knowledgeable and was a great teacher. Will go again next year!

Alaska is very rich with plants and animals. The tourguide showed us various flowers, berries, and discussed the wildlife. We saw a sample of a black bear paw compared to the size of a brown bear paw. Different pelts were on display for us to touch while a presentation was given. We hiked a gorgeous trail and saw the Copper River, glaciers, and the Wrangell Mountain range. It was a perfect outdoor experience. The abundance of wild flowers, berries, birds, and wildlife was breathtaking. The fresh air, the long days and lack of darkness during June was exceptionally wonderful. The tour was educational, fun, and envigorating. It was a lifetime experience.

This is a great fishing spot for sock eye salmon. There is no parking lot, you just park on the side of the road and hike to the river.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve Visitor Center

Reviewed By Bob S - Lake Wales, Florida

This is unlike any park that we have traveled too ! First the visitor center is not close to the park itself area if your heading into the Copper Mining Town - it's another 4-5 hour drive over a uncared for dirt road to a bridge where you park and walk over to the park area !
Only foot traffic and shuttle service to get to the mine! Tour is $28 @ well worth the money !
THIS IS NOT FOR A HANDICAP PERSON OR ONE THAT HAS WALKING ISSUES ! THERE ARE NO HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE AREAS - if you do have your own electric scooter - you can not get it too the town - it's 5 miles from the bridge on a very soft dirt road !
I myself a handicap person with walking issues did walk across the bridge took the shuttle into the info center where they dropped us off but everything is very hilly - including bathrooms are down a steep hill !
The main attraction is the copper mine which is a 13 story building with stairs ! AND ITS WAS STEEP EVEN FOR THE REST OF THE FAMILY !
The attraction itself if you can walk is wonderful but if your not you'll end up sitting on the bench in front of gift store for about 3-4 hours waiting for the rest to finish !

Kennicott Shuttle

Reviewed By PeninaPaula - Jerusalem, Israel

We were looking to visit Wrangell St. Elias National Park near Copper Center, Alaska. We knew we could not drive the RV on the McCarthy Road (gravel road) and we contacted the Kennicott Shuttle which provides round trip transportation from the Copper Center area to the Park. In the end we opted for a fly/drive combination package in conjunction with Wrangell Mountain Air.
Kennicott Shuttle picked us up at the RV park in the morning and drove us to the airport in Chitina, which is where we picked up the flight to McCarthy. We agreed to meet the shuttle in the afternoon for the ride back to the RV park. All the arrangements went off without a hitch.
The flight with Wrangell Mountain Air over the Park to McCarthy was amazing and offered breathtaking views of the mountains, glaciers, forests and streams. The day was partly cloudy/partly sunny so we were able to see quite a bit of the surrounding area. The "airport" in Chitina was no more than a dirt airstrip, but that didn't seem to matter at all.
For the ride out of the park we were told exactly where to meet the shuttle van, and we found it without any problem. The bumpy 2-hour ride back was made more pleasant by the explanations of our wonderful driver (sorry but I don't recall her name - maybe Kim?) who told us stories about local history and pointed out many points of interest.
All in all it was a wonderful day full of natural beauty and history. I would highly recommend the fly / drive combination to anyone thinking about visiting Wrangell St. Elias Park and the McCarthy & Kennecott area.
