We have a camper and had an awesome view of the lake. Our site was a bit awkward because our steps were on the parking side (looking at the RV they would be on the left) but our pad with the firepit was on the right of the trailer so we had to go around the trailer to relax. The sites were a nice size. Some of the best site locations had no hook-ups. The distance between campers was far enough that you have privacy. Oh and there are lots of trees which is great on hot days like we experienced. Hope this review helps you.

Prestwould Plantation and Gardens

Prestwould Plantation Manor House was built in 1790 and occupied 1794. At that time it was the largest dwelling in Virginia. House has approximately 80% of its original furnishings. Sir Peyton Skipwith and his wife Lady Jean had the house built for their plantation which had more than 10,000 acres located along the Roanoke River.

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

From the exterior, Prestwould isn't as imposing or as spectacular as the more celebrated antebellum plantations such as Oak Alley, Houmas House, Nottoway, Destrehan, Gaineswood or Evergreen. But it is the most intact and best documented plantation in southern Virginia, featuring papers and records that provide insight into the daily lives of slaves on the plantation and a 1790s slave house that is considered by architectural scholars to be the earliest known slave house in the South. Built by Sir William Byrd II in 1797, it is located on the north side of the Roanoke River, about six miles southwest of the intersection of Route 15 and Route 701, about one mile north of Clarksville, Virginia. The 46-acre property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003. At one time, Prestwould covered more than 4,000 acres and was among the largest plantations in the state. Touring the house and gardens and outbuildings is a unique experience, not to be compared to most other plantations. View the original furnishings brought to the house by the original owners, Sir Peyton Skipwith and Jean Miller Skipwith after their marriage in 1788. View the papers and records and ledgers and documents kept by the Skipwiths that provide insight into the daily lives of the slaves on the plantation, how they were trained, how they were used, how they were fed and clothed, even how they were places in irons. One letter refers to a white woman who was jailed for the murder of one of her slaves. The plantation complex includes eight buildings, all built before 1830 and most dating to the 1780s, including the main house, office, plantation store, slave quarters and a pair of smokehouses. The house is a brick building with a hip roof and a pair of interior chimneys. The main facade is symmetrical with seven bays, the center three bays of the first floor being sheltered by a gabled porch supported by Doric columns. This is a rare gem. We wouldn't have known about it except for reading a magazine article about some of the "least known antebellum plantations" in the South. We can only wonder how many more Prestwoulds are out there waiting to be rediscovered.

We spent the afternoon in Clarksville and happily stumbled into this gallery/store. They offer framing and have a lot of very nice art on display. They also have pottery, cheese, wine, and jewelry. My favorite things were painted pieces of driftwood with sunflowers and various other designs such as Halloween themes.

We love to visit wineries and have done a boatload from pretentious to down home on the farm. This is closer to the latter. This is well out of the way and not well marked. Follow your GPS and you ll be fine. Even when we pulled in we weren't sure we were in the right place.

Ed ( the owner, rep, winemaker ) greeted us warmly. We chatted and sampled their 3 wines. He then gave us a guided tour of the wineries inner workings, and the grounds in a golf cart. We spent a fast hour and enjoyed every second. We bought a half case of wine, I'm still not sure if it's because we really liked it or felt obligated after being treated so well and we felt a duty to keep the farm going.m

This feels like you're visiting your favorite uncle's to talk, drink and hang out. Only your buying wine at the end. We'll be back.

Outstanding semi-private 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross. Open to the public residing 35 or more miles away. Just minutes from shopping, dining and lodging in downtown Clarksville and Kerr Lake. Please call for tee times and current public greens fees.

Reviewed By rainierwood - Lynchburg, Virginia

I enjoyed playing this course. We played on a Friday morning with the VSGA VIP card, so it was very affordable. The course was busy, but pace of play was unaffected. The greens are tiny, the fairways generous. The par 3s are truly special. The par 5s are pretty easy, but 10 is the best with a true Donald Ross green--so many fall-off areas. The par 4s start feeling pretty similar on the back 9, but holes 6 and 9 on the front are excellent tests of golf. Loved the entire experience.
