Musee International de la Parfumerie

Created in 1989, this one-of-a-kind museum is situated in the symbolic City of Grasse, the cradle of the luxury perfume trade which began in France. Dedicated to one of the most prestigious traditional French businesses, the International Perfume Museum, a public institution awarded by the > label, is devoted to safeguarding and promoting the international heritage of scents, aromas and perfumes. Museum visitors will also discover the unique history of the great perfume Houses and producers. Bearing witness to the international technical, aesthetic, social and cultural history of the tradition of using scents, the museum covers every aspect of the history of fragrance through an anthropological approach including raw materials, manufacture, industry, innovation, business, design, and customs -through very diverse forms- decorative arts, textiles, archaeological finds and unique industrial items

Well laid out for telling all aspects of the perfume industry from the different fragrances, sourcing of ingredients from across the world, influences of civilizations and art and craftsmanship. When I next pick up my bottle of Chanel no.5 I’ll think of this museum. (You get to find out why it’s called no.5). Very good value at just 4 euros entry charge. We came by train and as a warning the area around the station is pretty grim and industrial looking. It’s a 20 minute steep walk to the historic Centre where the museum is located. The walk up is a little grim with graffiti strewn walls. Once you get to the historic heart of Grasse you’re in for a treat.
