8 Things to do Good for Couples in Urbino That You Shouldn't Miss

February 5, 2022 Emerita Lamoureux

Urbino (Italian: [urˈbiːno];  listen (help·info)) is a walled city in the Marche region of Italy, south-west of Pesaro, a World Heritage Site notable for a remarkable historical legacy of independent Renaissance culture, especially under the patronage of Federico da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino from 1444 to 1482. The town, nestled on a high sloping hillside, retains much of its picturesque medieval aspect. It hosts the University of Urbino, founded in 1506, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Urbino. Its best-known architectural piece is the Palazzo Ducale, rebuilt by Luciano Laurana.

Palazzo Ducale di Urbino

A gem of Renaissance architecture that gives you a sense of the sophistication of Duke Federico and his determination to create a cultural masterpiece in his small duchy. The inner courtyard is sublime and you can visit the stables/kitchens below to get an idea of the way the palace worked. When we went there were two exhibitions in the stables/kitchens and a wonderful exhibition on the influence of Ottoman and ME culture in Italian culture. Do not miss the Galleria Nazionale (paid entrance). All in all allow 3 hours for a relaxed visit but you could do it in less.

Writing a review about the entire Old Town feels a bit odd - but I think this is truly of the most beautiful Old Towns in Italy. The town was mostly built in the XV and XVIII centuries and is full of squares, churches, palaces, narrow back alleys, porticos, steep and winding streets and picturesque views. Palaces, churches and houses made with local bricks and the many university buildings form an amazing and compact urban area that is still not completely overwhelmed by tourists - if you take the time to walk around and explore.
