8 Sights & Landmarks in Akaroa That You Shouldn't Miss

May 4, 2022 Fernanda Pittenger

The French are known as the world’s most romantic people, so it makes sense that Akaroa—site of New Zealand’s first French settlement—is an ideal spot to set the scene for love. Hold hands with your paramour and stroll along the provincial harbor, where dolphins, penguins, and seals bob and chatter in the sparkling ice-blue water. First-class accommodations, quaint French bakeries and succulent restaurants are the perfect ingredients for a romantic getaway.

Akaroa Farm Tours

Don’t be misled that you are about to embark on merely a simple farm tour. A visit to this 5th, 6th and now 7th generation family, descendants of the earliest French settlers on Banks Peninsula, is thought provoking and entertaining whilst it educates you on how farming has developed from 1837 to the present day.

For such a small town, Akaroa has a wealth of attractions and the Powerhouse Gallery is one. Hidden down a side street it is run by volunteers & open nearly every day with ever changing exhibitions. The current Yin & Yang exhibition contrasts very different works by local artists.

Well worth going in! Deceptive from the outside as it looks fresh bright and almost modern, but step inside to yesteryear. Beautiful ceiling and timberwork everywhere. Lovely stained glass beautifully crafted.

Britomart Monument

Reviewed By 926grahamb - Raunds, United Kingdom

The Britomart Monument or obelisk is to be found well out of the village, right around the headland. It can't be seen from any low point in the village. The top of the very tall flag pole beside it helps in location terms. From Top Ten Holiday Park it is a good 30/40 minute walk. Worth it just to view Victorian values at their most greedy and exquisitive.
