Khajuraho Temples

Magnificent temples built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D.

Reviewed By rambabuyarlagadda - Lafayette, United States

These temples especially the ones in the western group of temples are well preserved and are wonderful examples of the best temple architecture. One thing that is really unique in Khajuraho is that daily life in contemporary time is depicted beautifully in sculptures on the walls. Gives the best historical evidence of how liberated and equal partners women were to men in the Sanatana Dharma culture prior to Islamic invasions. One has to get over the superficial view of eroticism to get to the real meaning behind the sculptures and get the concept of transforming sexual energy into spiritual energy. A good guide with a spiritual understanding of the temple sculptures would be very helpful.

Dhubela Museum

Reviewed By jbschmor - Springfield, United States

I stopped by on my way from Khajuraho to Orchha and it remains one of my favorite memories, partly because it was for both me and my driver something unexpected, historically interesting but also like a step into a separate world. We saw people tending to their waterchestnuts on the lake, and beside the lake a small village, very clean, where all houses are still constructed from thick mud walls and ceramic tiled roofs. The museum is interesting, but the two cenotaphs were amazing - worth taking the loop around the lake. At each, there was a young local ready and willing to take us on a short guided tour, helping us to find the stairs so we could climb to cool breezes and truly beautiful, unspoilt views. There are also other abandoned palaces in the area. I hope this place will not be over-developed for tourists, though the cenotaphs and palaces need upkeep. Right now, it is a quiet and dreamlike place.

State Museum of Tribal and Folk Art

I was there on a Monday and unfortunately the museum was closed. Luckily I saw a gardener and requested him to open the gate to the garden. They allowed me inside , I was even able to see the collection inside the museum, which is beautifully arranged. Was able to pickup some authentic souvenirs from the shop too. Overall was delighted by the helpfulness of the staff. Kudos to them!!

This is wonderful shop in front of the eastern group of temples at Khajuraho . The cloth here is handwoven and reasonably priced . I liked that the store manager who attended to us was polite , but never overbearing , at any time . The shop is run by a private trust that engages local weavers . Its got a really good collection and one should definitely check it out when in Khajuraho

Archaeological Museum Khajuraho

Reviewed By chow69 - Bhopal, India

The Archaeological Museum in Khajuraho is in two parts. The older museum is located near the hotel Headquarter Khajuraho opposite the ShivSagar Lake, This is being gradually emptied and the artifacts are being shifted to a newly constructed swanky building near the Circuit House. We visited both the museums during our recent trip to Khajuraho. This new museum is just the place from where one should start one's Khajuraho Tour. The ticket to visit the Archaeological Museum is the same which is used to visit the Western Group of Temples. No one will tell you about this, as there are very few visitors to the museums. With constant excavation being carried out in and around Khajuraho by the Archaeological Survey of India, it is logical the have museums to showcase their finds. The old museum has 5 major galleries, namely the Vaishnav, Shaivait, Jaina, Miscellaneous and one more. The new museum presently has only one gallery, which is beautifully laid out and extremely well labelled. The museum is to have a total of six galleries, but work is moving at extremely slow pace, due to the shortage of funds. We visited these museums on our last day in Khajuraho. Frankly it is recommended that one should visit the new museum first in order to gain a better understanding of what will be visible in the temples. Most of the guides make up stories which give one a different picture of Khajuraho, at least ours did. The museum would clear all misconceptions in advance and equip a visitor with adequate knowledge prior to seeing the temples..
