Taipei Guest House

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

When the term "guest house" is used, many Western visitors assume it's a slightly down-at-heal residential hotel at the sea-side. Nothing could be further than the truth. The Taipei Guest House dates from the Japanese colonial era; it's a magnificent structure; it's used to house visiting VIPs and host civic receptions. I have been invited to attend several receptions at the Taipei Guest House, most recently to be introduced to Tsai Ing-wen, president of the Republic of China. It's certainly a prime example of Taiwanese craftsmanship of which the people of the island are rightly proud .

Shin Kong Life Tower

This 803 ft high-rise building was the tallest in Taiwan when it was completed in 1993.

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The Shin Kong Life Tower is in Xhongxiao Rd, opposite the Taipei Main Station. The Shin Kong Life Tower, when it was built in 1993, was one of Taipei's tallest skyscrapers. At 51 storeys and 245 meters (800 feet) it remains a major landmark. The Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store occupies the lower 12 floors. Although the building is still a business center, the commercial center of the city has shifted to the east. Taipei 101 is the dominant financial hub in Taipei.

The Nanhai Theatre is associated with the Nanhai Academy; it is built in Chinese period style. You can book tickets for performances on-line. "Nan Hai" means "Southern Ocean" in Chinese, it refers to Chinese sojourners who left mainland China to live in the South-East Asian region. There is also a lotus pond; the flowers bloom in spring. Chinese people think the lotus is the most perfect flower, as its nature resembles the Buddha's perfection..
