Reviewed By TheetravelblogThis is the vibrating heart of the Appenzell region. Local tradition in a very pleasant way all over, lots of charming details like a backpack in the room. Very friendly and professional staff all over, surprisingly lots of locals which is great! We enjoed dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both perfect. Service was fast and very professional, even the place was packed. Great wine recommendation! Best spot to explore the area, highly recommended!

25 spacious rooms all with en-suite bathrooms/shower. The lodge is located right next to the train station, 20 (free) parking spaces available too. W-LAN for all – 24/7 and with unlimited data. The lodge is the perfect place to discover the beautiful nature of Appenzell. If you are up for a hike, mountain bike tour or just some relaxing days in the mountains, this is your place.

Reviewed By SallychristineThe room was dark and dingy and more like a dormitory than hotel room. It was very small. The bathroom had a large window without any privacy at all. We stayed with our two grandsons and so this was not ideal. Perhaps this could have been mentioned when we booked as we did so directly with the hotel. Our request in the morning for some sort of curtain, was largely ignored. The staff were neither friendly nor efficient. It is in a very nice area though and we would certainly return but stay somewhere else for sure.

Nice and quiet hotel with excellent restaurant
Reviewed By LittleswansSpent two days with family visiting the Appenzell area. Room is essential and appropriate for a 3 stars family hotel. Personnel is very kind and warm, the young lady speak good English as well. We had dinner at the restaurant, food was really excellent, the menu offers traditional meals and also monthly specials ; we had mussels, out a list of 10+ types that you would not find even at a sea restaurant. Breakfast offers typical choices and it is of good quality as well. We’ll be happy to visit again.

Nice for a quiet sleep
Reviewed By Angelique MThe outside looks awesome. The inside was crowdy. Everywhere you looked there was some stuff from their past. Some nice things some schmuck. The staff was very nice, the room was comfortable, the food was very good and free parking in front of the hotel. Also there were some funny sheeps beside the hotel. Nice!

Reviewed By rharneisA great family run hotel in the heart of the most beautiful mountain scenery with very friendly staff. We had intended staying in the well known tourist centre Appenzell and were very glad we stayed here instead. The restaurant was excellent and moderately priced with wonderful views. The room was a good size. The balcony overlooking the valley had a table and comfortable chairs. From the hotel door you are straight into a wide choice of hiking routes for all levels of ability. There is also the little valley train only a 100 meters from the hotel that can take you to a variety of different places and above all Appenzell centre in only 10 minutes. We never used the car. No parking problems.

Disappointing
Reviewed By TravelaanddThis was the end of our vacation in Switzerland and we were very much looking forward to Appenzell as we had not been in that part of Switzerland before. Appenzell did not disappoint it’s a spectacular area with wonderful hiking and beautiful scenery. This Gasthaus did disappoint! We felt very uncomfortable they seem to want to cater to Germany speaking guests only. The room is cute. Breakfast is very sparse compared to the other places we had stayed. And we only ate dinner in their restaurant once. They had a large group of hikers in and the entire staff were catering to them we were lucky to have gotten our dinner at all. Oh and that next morning they put out a buffet style breakfast which the large group ate almost everything... we got a piece of bread and some cheese, nothing was replenished for the remaining guest. To be fair the next mornings we received plates of bread and meat and cheese brought to our table but as I said sparse in comparison to the other accommodations we’d stayed in. Room cleaning-first day the bed was made that’s it! Next day we room was actually cleaned and the proper amount of towels for two were provided, next day the room was cleaned and little treats were left the final day they fully cleaned the room left wine glasses and another treat. A little too late that kind of service should have been from day one! There are many little Gasthaus’s throughout the area as we found doing the Whiskey trek. Do your research and I think you’ll find better options.

Ideale Lage für Ausflüge im Alpstein
Reviewed By Markus0512 Nächte durfte ich hier in familiärer Atmosphäre verbringen. Die Lage ist ideal als Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen im Alpstein. Gut zu erreichen mit Auto und Appenzeller Bahnen. Ich nächtigte in einem geschmackvoll renoviertem Doppelzimmer mit Dusche. Das Zimmer war gross und hell, aber ohne unnötigen Luxus. Es gibt auch Zimmer mit Etagendusche. Das Frühstück war reichlich und alles frisch. Leider werden im gemütlichen Restaurant keine Speisen serviert, aber zum "Höckle" für ein Bier oder einen feinen Nussgipfel sehr zu empfehlen. Die äusserst sympathische Wirtin ist immer gegenwärtig. Ich werde wieder kommen. Ah, fast hätte ich die feinen Produkte der Bäckerei vergessen...unbedingt reinschauen!
