Chhatris

Chhatris are about 2.5km from Shivpuri bus stand, shared rickshaw rides are easily available, the last stretch is on a bumpy dirt road. Entry is Rs50 for foreigners plus Rs10 camera fee.
Two main chhatris are mesmerisingly beautiful, Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia's was my favourite: skilful metal work on doors and chandeliers, stunning marble inlay with flowers, decorative jali windows etc. Main Mughal style garden is well kept and picturesque with lots of lovely carved benches and ornamental lamp posts. The whole set up with pools, waterways and Fountains would make a great Bollywood film set, if only there was water! Unfortunately, the Gardens at the back are un-loved: dry and grey during the winter and not so tidy either. Soft golden light at sunset is very atmospheric.
Site does not get many international visitors so if expect 'ek selfie, didi?' in abundance if this applies to you. Please note you need to leave your shoes at the gate (socks are allowed) and that there is no-one to guard your shoes.

What you have to see is the far sightedness of the rulers of small kingdoms of yore. They build check dams and they built artificial lakes, to ensure that water was fed to the population. These also helped develop an eco-system of flora and fauna. Take the boat and give it a shot and view the crocs lazing around.

Survaya ki Garhi

Reviewed By spja - Noida, India

Its the most amazing site preserved by Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) that I have seen in last 2 decades! Its not frequented at all and is a hidden gem.
While its a small castle (garhi) complex with moat and all but it was originally a Hindu monastery that taught yoga! Apparently built by a local king called Avantivarman for his guru Purandar and was part of a 5 such monasteries in the area. Its earlier name was "Saraswati Pattam". It was partially destroyed by a local mughal chieftan and subsumed to form the current castle complex. One can clearly see the difference between the small stone pieces for later building as compared to the larger and less smooth ones used to construct the temples and the monastery building. It was apparently partially restored in 1916 by the brits.
The complex is too beautiful to be described. The enclosed photographs do a much better job - one can see ancient hindu motifs, outside the Shiva temple. There is a small step well for water storage and there is still a huge millstone - which was apparently used by the students to ground flour for their food!
The temple is very well preserved- the grounds are exceptionally clean and well maintained and gives the look of being preserved as it was about a 1000 years back!
Its a small place but one can easily spend at least half a day here. I must have taken around 150 photographs in the 2 hours that I spent here and could have easily spent 4 more if I had the time!
And there is a large contingent of monkeys for company as humans are scarce!

Unique. In Europe people would pay top dollars, oops, Euros, to get into these places and marvel at the idea behind the architecture. Traditional architecture built underneath a man made waterfall, leading to water fed artificial lake that caters to the needs of the whole township. A complete water management system, the like of which does not seem to be replicated anymore.

Pawa Waterfalls

Reviewed By NitinS1987 - Ghaziabad, India

I have visited this place just 4 days ago.
This place is about 35 Km from Shivpuri, and around 18 KM inside from Shivpuri - Sheopur highway, there is no road at all after bamra village, hence forgot to travel with car, if you are in a group of 15 to 20 people including boys in majority, then please try to visit.
There is no government facility, food etc, and even if your vehicle have some problem due to awful roads, it will be horrible experience.
Conclusion is, site is good, but visit in day only, 0 facility, No Roads, Visit with group only if you are not familiar with the area, if you are trying to visit with 4 to 5 people, then please avoid to visit this place.
