Stephen F. Austin State Park

Reviewed By M J - Austin, Texas

My husband and I stopped by Stephen F. Austin State Park for an afternoon visit. The Brazos River recently flooded and most of the trails were closed on our visit. The trails we hiked were nice. The RV and tent campgrounds were nice as well. The shower house in the tent campground was extra nice and clean. I did not visit the shower house in the RV area. All of the RV sites had full hookups and were pull thrus. The park is about 4 miles north of I-10. This is certainly a park we will to return to with my RV and stay longer.

What a wonderful place to see 50's and 70's automotive lore centered around MOPAR - mostly Dodge and Plymouth. Just the entire building is unique with signs, cars, soda fountain, motorcycles (4 only). This place caters for parties. We did not attend for that, just a senior citizen trip. Note that you need to call to visit to make sure it is available that day. Might be reserved for a private party. Also, children under 12 not allowed. Access to the 'stuff' is up close, so they are afraid of damage. Only around for 3 1/2 years, so very new. On beautiful land, little hard to find.

We came to YBR with a group. Luckily we came really early and were able to hear the wonderful Gerry playing piano and violin Worth the drive just to hear him. Once the kitchen opens there is no more live music so plan on coming before 6pm if you want to hear it. The crab cakes are fantastic. Salmon entree was good but a but pricey. Their Chardonnay and Cabernet are wonderful and many in our party loved the peach wine as well. Will definitely come back.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site

In 1823, Stephen F. Austin established San Felipe de Austin as the capital for his colonization efforts. From 1824 to 1836, this was the social, economic, and political center of the Anglo colonies in Texas. It served as the capital of the provisional government of Texas. Citizens burned the town in 1836 during the "Runaway Scrape" retreat from Mexican Gen. Santa Anna's army. Today, the site shares these compelling stories of Texas' colonial era.

We bicycled from nearby Austin State Park to the historical site. Seveal monuments and markers, and some old buildings. One building houses a small but informative historical museum about the first Texans. Rich history. Worth the time to stop off of I-10 if you are interested in Texas history. Free, donations accepted.
