Samdruptse Hill

Reviewed By rajibmu - Kolkata

Samdruptse Monastery which is about 7kms from Namchi town and up on Samdruptse hill. Before Char Dham, this used to be the main attraction of Namchi, it is still very popular among tourists though. Outside the entrance there is a large paid parking. A large building has been constructed for covered parking in the upper floor as well as hosting shops at the ground floor.
Samdruptse means 'Wish fulfilling Hill'. The locals believe that the hill is actually a dormant volcano. The Buddhists lamas have been regularly offering prayers so that the volcano does not erupt. It has stayed calm so far. Buddhist prayer flags flutter on one side of the pathway. Take off your shoes before you climb the flight of steps to reach the upper platform.

Now look up and you will be awestruck with the mammoth 45-meter statue of Sikkim's patron saint Guru Padmasambhava set up on an elevated platform. The face is coated with gold that glitter in the sun. Walk around the platform (start from the lwft and make a full circle) and you can get magnificent view of the Mountains and Forests. The entry to the monastery is from the backside. The foundation stone here was laid by Dalai Lama on 22nd October 1997. Subsequently when the work started, it took over 3 years with many renowned architects, engineers and over 1,000 laborers who worked hard together to set up the statue and the monastery.

Ralong Monastery

Huge monastery surrounded by the Mountains. You reach after about half an hour's drive from Ravangla through beautiful winding roads amidst a wildlife sanctuary. We spotted a couple of deer on our way! At the front exterior of the monastery, is a small fountain/pool with a statuette and a gatehouse like entry point. And when you enter the main compound an elaborately tiled porch greets you. The monastery is HUGE and surrounded by the monks' quarters. You can interact with the little guys who are undergoing their training and studies here. A lovely place and a must visit if you are near Ravangla. Just ensure that you do not disturb the sanctity of the place by any means with your presence.

Ralong Hot Springs is a small distance away from Borong and can be reached by a small walk from Borong, or by a Taxi from Ravangla. The trek from Borong to the Hot Springs is an excellent stretch for birding and also to experience the local village life. The Hot Springs is also a common meeting place for the villages and if you go there during winters, you may find the entire village taking a bath there.
Worth a visit if you are staying at Borong.

Doling Gompa

Reviewed By Sumana-Sumitro - Vadodara, India

We approached this place through the stairs beside Hotel Clouds Inn on Legship-Ravangla Road. There are other approaches as well. Be careful about taking this approach as there are more than 500 stairs cut in to the slope of the hill through a dense forest. For adventure lovers, this route is suggested. Do not try with kids, elders or people with knee problems. The downhill is relatively easy though some place the stairs are slippery and height of stairs are bit on the higher side. Carry plenty of water and very less weight in terms of bags / backpacks etc. The uphill will try your stamina. Be careful of leeches, other insects. There might be snakes as well.
At the end of the stairs, you'll find the gompa. It is situated in a clearing with hills rising high behind. There is a small lake. The entire area is surrounded with prayer flags. Don't expect to see any human soul, a stray dog might be your only companion. Nevertheless, maintain the sanctity of the place.
The view once you reach the gompa is amazing. The first thing you realize is peace, tranquility and humility.
A moment of silence will enable you to hear chirping of birds in the surrounding forest.
We loved it.....good place for photography

The entire drive from Damthang Bazaar to Ravagla via Rayong is beautiful through dense Forests with sun playing hide and seek. Be sure to reach early and you shall be treated to the majestic sight of first rays of sun lighting up Pandim, Kabru and Narsing (weather permitting!!)
You can club a visit to this place with Tinkitam, where terrestrial orchids bloom in the month of October and November
