We had the place almost to ourselves which made the visit special. It's definitely worthwhile to buy the guidebook for $2 at the visitor center, although I wish the Park Service would make these available to borrow and return to be more green. Be sure to make time to hike to the overlook atop the canyon rim for a bird's eye view of the entire complex. A truly special place.

On our visit we were almost the only ones there, giving the place an eerie spiritual feel. Be sure to take the path between this site and Pueblo Bonito that follows the cliff, rather than returning to the parking lot, as there are several petroglyphs to examine along the way.

Getting to the canyon is tough. Dirt roads with washboards that will make you and your vehicle shake like in a paint vibrator. Some visitors were not happy at all with the experience. My sister and I travelled in with a compact RV and made it ok. This rough experience that lasts almost an hour really behooves you to stay overnight at the Gallo Campground if you intend on staying for more than a day (would you should). Make reservations if you can. Visitor Center has trail guides to help explaining markers that you will see at the houses and on the trails. Must see Pueblo Bonito, and highly recommend the arduous Pueblo Alto Trail (do the full 5.4 miles) that will take up on the mesa and give you beautiful views of the canyon and of the houses. Our road trip started at Chaco Canyon which was great because we learned so much about the architecture spanning several hundred years and about the culture.

The hike to Una Vida offers a great introduction to the ruins in the canyon, with the trailhead right by the visitor center. The hike is not technical. Though the final 100’ ascent is much steeper than the majority of the hike, my little kids had not trouble with it. The ascent was also worth it, as there are great petroglyphs to see at the top. Taking the ranger-guided tour also added a lot of color to the experience; the ranger also did a great job of relating to my kids on the hike.

This butte is the natural capstone and most memorable physical feature of Chaco Canyon. You can't climb it, bur it is certainly photo friendly. Try early morning or late afternoon for best photos. The centerpiece of the center of Ancestral Puebloan ancient culture.
