This is different museum that is devoted to the history of incarceration in Texas – the good and the bad. There are interesting exhibits of weapons commandeered from the prisoners, the Old Sparky electric chair, and a replica of an actual modern prison cell. Be sure to look at the leatherworks and other items crafted by the prisoners available for sale. All-in-all, we spent about an hour here.

This is a great place to visit but the museum is under remodeling so it's probably best to wait until the construction is done. The highway department is also changing the exit which would be an additional reason to wait till later. The statue itself is awesome and great for photos so if you don't mind all the construction it is still a wonderful place to visit.

My husband and I like to camp mid-week in Spring and Fall to avoid a crowd. Even with some pretty gloomy weather, Huntsville State Park was slightly hectic for us. It is nice to see a well-loved park. There was a lot of fishing, a lot of jogging, and a fair amount of camping.
The camping sites were a little cramped and close together. Many of the trails were shut down due to Hurricane Harvey but there was plenty of hiking to do. We liked the Prairie Branch Loop which had a rough, rooty walking surface due to the storm but afforded pretty views of Lake Raven.
The staff was polite and helpful as we've come to expect from our Texas state parks. Facilities are clean and well maintained. Our only disappointment was that we couldn't rent a canoe as we'd planned. They don't specify on the phone app but you can't do that on weekdays.

I loved this place!!! Visiting from Northern Ireland with Texan relatives last week went tho this place on my last day and It was amazing. I visited the outside buildings and the museum itself which I thought was good as the had a lot of original items that belonged to him and his family also about his early family life. I think he had a very extraordinary and interesting life and I liked to read about it in the museum. Lovely pond with some turtles, ducks and beautiful flowers. If I ever got the chance to go back it would be first in my list.

A nice local tribute to freedom fighters starting with the Revolutionary War until today. Many of the families contributed memorabilia of the service person. We were pleasantly surprised at how comprehensive it was.

Plenty of Texas historical figures are buried here - worth a look around. Including the first sheriff of Walker County who died at age 38. Of course the huge Sam Houston Monument with the misspelling on the back is there too.

We have moved to 1900 Normal Park Dr. So if you return please don't think we have closed ...just moved across town!
