Ticket - Compound Single Ticket for all Stupa monuments in complex Ashoka Pillar of Sanchi (near the southern gateway of the Great Sanchi Stupa) is believed to have been erected around 250 B.C. on the orders of Ashoka .Although the entire structure has not been preserved, one can see the shaft of the pillar from main Torana gateway, and the crown has been displayed in the nearby Sanchi Archaeological Museum.......... The crown of the pillar is its most attractive feature. It is adorned by four regal lions facing in four directions, with their backs to each other. The style of architecture has been hailed as Greco-Buddhist. The figure is considered to be an outstanding example of the aesthetic elegance and the exquisite structural balance characteristic of the Mauryan architecture. A representation of this figure containing the four lions has been adopted as the National Emblem of India.The lions of this Ashoka pillar probably supported a Dharmachakra, or the wheel of dharma law.................... Made of finely polished sandstone, the pillar has an Ashokan inscription and an inscription in the ornamental Sankha Lipi from the Gupta period. The Ashokan inscription, engraved in early Brahmi characters, unfortunately is badly damaged. The Ashokan inscription said that- “ the path is prescribed both for the monks and for the nuns. As long as (my) sons and great-grandsons (shall reign ; and) as long as the Moon and the Sun (shall endure), the monk or nun who shall cause divisions in the Sangha, shall be compelled to put on white robes and to reside apart. For what is my desire? That the Sangha may be united and may long endure”” The pillar, when intact, was about 13 meters (42 feet) in height and consisted of round and slightly tapering monolithic shaft, with bell-shaped capital surmounted by an abacus and a crowning ornament of four lions. The abacus is adorned with four flame palmette designs separated one from the other by pairs of geese, symbolical perhaps of the flock of the Buddha's disciples. The lions are now quite disfigured. The sandstone out of which the pillar is carved came from the quarries of Chunar several hundred miles away, implying that the builders were able to transport a block of stone over forty feet in length and weighing almost as many tons over such a distance. They probably used water transport, using rafts during the rainy season up until the Ganges, Jumna and Betwa rivers.

Visited this unique place showing how thousands year ago mankind was living in most natural dwelling that is rock shelter.A place surrounded by green jungle .I travelled solo by taking a bus to Hoshangabad ,from ISBT Bhopal ,got down at BHimbetaka corner about 3 km ahead of Obwdullah Ganj.A 3km well maintained road with around 450 ft rise takes to to the caves.Around 15 caves are open to be visited by tourists.

This is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva built in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj . It's an incomplete temple which has a 22 feet Shivlinga. It's an hour away from Bhopal approx 45 kms . The ancient Indian architecture is to be marvelled at when you see the temple design roughly sketched on a slab of stone to the right of the Temple

Sanchi museum is located near main Sanchi stupas site. It is a single floored white building with a compound of lush green lawns and shady trees. The Museum was established by Sir John Marshall in 1919, when he was Director General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). When planned excavation work was started under supervision of Sir John Marshall, need for museum arose to properly store and showcase the actual findings thus museum was made in small building. Sanchi museum comprises of four galleries and one large central hall. Here variety of sculptural artefacts have been showcased for public view. These articles are from Sanchi and its nearby Buddhist and Hindu sites like Vidisha, Gyraspur, Murelkhurd etc. Among them most well known exhibit in the Sanchi museum is the Ashokan capital displayed in main hall. This piece of sculpture shows four-lions seated back-to-back and once topped Pillar No.-10 in Sanchi. It reminds us of lion capital of Sarnath. This image of four-lion is taken as national emblem of India.

The Great Bowl is situated in Sanchi and is considered as one of the most excellent tourist attractions of Madhya Pradesh. The place is considered as a cradle of Buddhist renaissance as the name of the place was mentioned in several Buddhist documents and scripts. There is a huge area of magnificent monuments in Sanchi and these monuments reflect the spiritual customs of the past. One of the amazing artistic grandeurs is captured in the bunch of monuments and the best among them is definitely the Great Bowl. The Great Bowl is one of the most precious relics and was the storehouse for food. Foods were distributed amongst the monks from this bowl. The Great Bowl was made from a massive stone block and is considered as one of the finest examples of the Buddhist era. Behind Monastery 51, partway down the hill towards Stupa 2, is the Great Bowl, carved from a huge boulder, into which food and offerings were placed for distribution to the monks.
