The Hyde Collection Art Museum and Historic Home

The Hyde Collection Trust was founded in 1952 by Charlotte Pruyn Hyde, a Gilded Age collector who shared her art collection and home with the public. The Museum opened in 1963, after her death. The Hyde's core collection, acquired by Mrs. Hyde and her husband, Louis, includes works by such artists as Sandro Botticelli, El Greco, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Edgar Degas, Georges Seurat, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as well as American artists Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, and James McNeill Whistler. The Museum's collection of Modern and Contemporary art features works by artists including Josef Albers, Dorothy Dehner, Sam Gilliam, Adolph Gottlieb, Grace Hartigan, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, George McNeil, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Bridget Riley. Today, the Museum includes the historic house and a modern wing with five galleries, and innovative programming to inspire with art.

The Hyde Collection is a world class museum located in upstate New York that can truly boast about it's amazing collection - one that you would not expect to find outside of a major city. Situated just outside of the city center of Glens Falls, which is a bustling town full of shops, cafes, breweries and parks - this amazing museum is the perfect destination to explore art ranging from Rembrandt to Picasso, work from the middle ages to modern work from the likes of Robert Motherwell. They also have amazing art programs for adults, children and families. The Hyde Collection is a perfect place to plan a day trip around to explore the Museum and offerings in Glens Falls, Queensbury and Lake George - any time of the year. Its also a perfect place to stop, rest, reflect and relax for travelers embarking on other adventures in the Adirondacks and is a quick trip of the highway for travelers coming into the region from NYC, NJ, Boston or Montreal. The Hyde is a cozy place to spend an afternoon in the winter, and a lovely space to wander and explore during the summer during track season in Saratoga Springs during dark days at the track. I can't recommend this museum enough - the quality and ambience of the space, the new exhibitions and their permanent collection which truly rivals that of museums you expect to find in NYC, Philadelphia and even in major European art and cultural hubs and the plethora of options to explore surrounding the museum make this spot a perfect destination .... it's also a truly romantic spot for a date too ;)

The Shirt Factory

The Shirt Factory was built in 1902 for the McMullen-Leavens Company as a shirt factory, the building was expanded in 1910 as production increased. In the 1930's the product line expanded into dress manufacturing. The shirt and dresses produced here were high quality fashion featured on the pages of publications like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Production continued here through 1996 when the factory closed its doors. In 1999 the current owner began a slow process of rehabilitating the building and breaking it up into rentable studio space. Over the years the space has grown and evolved. Visitors will find an eclectic mix of individuals calling the 70 plus studios here home, offering a wide range of goods, services, classes and more. The building is open daily 8am-5pm, individual studios set their own hours/availability, please check our website for studio hours. While here you will notice machines in the halls and dresses and shirts displayed in cases, these are from the original factory that operated here, for which the building is named. The first floor is our "designated retail area" all studios on this floor are open on Thur-Sat from 12pm-5pm, many studios on the other floors are also open at this time, making these ideal days to visit the building! The range offered by tenants is impressive! There is kung fu/martial arts/tai chi, yoga & zumba, loose leaf tea, baked goods, Himalayan salt lamps and Himalayan salt products, pottery, furniture, original artwork in a variety of forms and mediums, acupuncture, massage, vintage goods, a hair salon, yarn and fiber arts...You have to it experience to truly appreciate the variety. For an experience unlike any other, visit the building during an open house, especially the two that occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The owner allows the tenants to invite outside vendors in to set up in the halls, it is an amazing opportunity not only to shop local, but to find unique one of a kind gifts for yourself and everyone else on your list! On our website is a full directory with tenant descriptions, hours and contact information, as well as a calendar with upcoming events and classes to help you make the most of your visit!

The building is a converted factory where they made shirts, and there are pictures and garment displays throughout. Now there are a lot of boutique and one-of-a-kind stores inside that are fun and fanciful and worth the visit. Stop at The Stone Stash if you like rocks ... or even if you don't because there are so many cool things worth your time. And if you go to Sensibiliteas you're going to be stunned by how many loose-leaf options you can buy as the options are a shelves that go up to the ceiling.
