Eagle Track Zipline

Eagle Track Zipline established in 2010, we set out with the aim of creating a ECO friendly jungle zipline course for the enjoyment of tourists and to support the local community as well as helping conserve the surrounding jungle for future generations. Our zipline adventure is situated 40 minute from the center of Chiang Mai city. Situated between three jungle hill tribe villages in a beautiful hillside valley, with the river Maeram running through the middle of this fertile land leading to two waterfalls, which you are free to visit and relax in. Eagle track Zipline started the zipline project with full agreement from the local Hmong and Karen communities, who once cultivated popies in the area until it came under the royal project scheme after a visit from HM the King of Thailand in 1972, They then changed to alternative crops of brown rice, maize, egg plants, soy beans etc. Eagle Track Zipline is a community based tourism operator. Our zipline ECO adventure is operated in a co-operative manner with the etho-Eco agricultural livelihood conservation group in Bann Wang Hang, Maeram. We employ local villagers and put them through courses to be trained as professional guides, they have been fully trained in safety and advanced first aid, as well as speaking a variety of languages, they are friendly helpful and happy to answer any questions you have. This year we are planning on planting 2000+ tree seedling to help in areas where there has been deforestation. We also supply accommodation and meals for local people working at Eagle Track Zipline, as well as other community based ventures. Without you our customers none of this would be possible. Many thanks from Eagle Track Zipline team.

Maerim Elephant Sanctuary

Here at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary our mission is to rescue miss-treated elephants and provide them with a beautiful environment where they are safe, loved and cared for. We are 100% against elephant riding, performances, tricks and any method of training or discipline where pain is inflicted to achieve a result. We believe that by sharing our passion with our guests we can all contribute towards providing rescued elephants a beautiful life which they deserve. In supporting our cause you will make memories to treasure as you roam freely with or magnificent elephants. Feed them, bond with them and bath with them. By choosing our sanctuary you will be actively contributing to saving the next gentle giant from a life of slavery. Let us assure you that we are not a money making outfit, we are here because of our passion for elephant. Along this journey you be informed of the realities of caring for elephants and the cruelties they endure before we rescue them.

We visited Chiang Mai over a weekend and decided to add this tour to our agenda since it offered a half day trip. SO glad we did! They are running a good program and are caring for the elephants well. Our host was very knowledgable, witty, and very available for questions when he wasn't presenting. Feeding the elephants was a highlight even though I was initially intimidated by their size. I chose not to "mud" with the elephants and still felt I got my money's worth. Afterwards we enjoyed some leisurely time by the pool and they end the tour with a great little perk...a group cooking class for their local Thai noodle soup Khao Soi - it was delish!

Siam Insect Zoo

The Siam Insect-Zoo & Museum is a great place for famlies visiting Chiang Mai. The facility was renovated in 2010 and includes exhibits with insects ranging from caterpillars to beetles to butterflies.

I traveled alone to the Siam Insect Zoo by taxi from Chiang Mai because Hubby wasn't interested in looking at insect displays. I'm so glad I did. This was incredibly interesting, besides being the only insect zoo I've ever heard of, anywhere in the world. The owner of the B&B we stayed at in Chiang Mai told me that the insect zoo was established by a man who'd contracted malaria from a mosquito bite in his youth, which caused him to start researching mosquitos, and then other insects as well. The collection of preserved insects is astonishing - three rooms full of wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling displays, including thousands of insects from all over the world, along with a wealth of information about each creature. I was delighted to enter the butterfly garden, where beautiful specimens were flitting from flower to flower. They weren't afraid to get close to me, and a few nearly landed on me. There's a spider room with live specimens of gargantuan spiders, many poisonous, all confined in aquariums. If the staff would clean the glass, they'd be much easier to watch and visitors would be able to take photos. There's also a display with aquariums containing many species of large "walking stick" insects. You can hold one, if you're willing. Again the glass really needs cleaning. One aquarium contains one of the most poisonous insects on the planet - a giant red centipede. You can't hold this 12-inch long monster because his bite can kill a child or someone in frail health. I was fascinated watching a huge night-slayer scorpion, bearded dragons, beautiful iguanas, and a couple of turtles for good measure. Admission is only about $4 USD. I spent more than an hour checking out the displays. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Don't miss this museum if you're traveling anywhere near Mae Rim.
