St. Jovan Kaneo

Reviewed By TerraVR - Varna, Bulgaria

As if landed on a hill, you can see it everywhere - if you are above it, if you are on a boat tour (the view is amazing at sunset), from both shores. From the playground in front of the church the view is also amazing, it is no accident a favorite decor for wedding photos. The church itself is in a typical orthodox style, renovated, much attended. You can reach it from downtown or from the fortress, but you must. You will not regret it.

Saint Climent of Ohrid

Reviewed By cherriesfan_9 - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Compared to some of the other churches in and around Ohrid, this church, St Kliment is a bit understated - although we still thought that this serene building was most enjoyable. Unusually parts of this church are very simplistic , white washed walls contrasting with dark stained wood panels, but this had the effect of being a respectful inspiring and reflective spiritual building. Given the almost understated nature of the church, the location of St Kliment final resting place is almost hidden away, unusual for this saint has achieved an almost cult status.

Monastery of Saint Naum

Reviewed By Jellyroll1 - Melbourne, Australia

Svet Naum was high on my list of places to visit while in ohrid. The church sits on top of the hill built in the 16th century. It’s the oldest Balkan church. Peaceful and tranquil surroundings. Surround by beautiful gardens and an amazing view of lake ohrid. I would suggest bringing your swimmers and spending the day at Svet Naum. You can have a relaxing boat ride along the lake, enjoy lunch at the many restaurants, shop at the many survivor stores, take a swim in ohrid lake, explore the churches or just chill out at one of the cafes enjoying the scenery. We actually visited Svet Naum twice and I would go again. Absolutely beautiful. Enjoyment for the whole family

Plaoshnik

Reviewed By salschmidt - Republic of North Macedonia, null

The most peaceful outlook over Lake Ohrid, this beautiful Byzantine (Eastern Orthodox) church is perched up on the hill in Old City Park with magical views. Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the church is also protected by UNESCO. The church is a replica of the old church of St. Panteleimon, built by St. Clement of Ohrid in 863, demolished by the Ottomans. The construction of the present church was completed in 2002. Archaeologists have come to believe that the church is located on the site where the first students of the Glagolitic alphabet (used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic) were taught into the First Bulgarian Empire. Only a short 10 minute walk from the old city, up a small hill, easily accessible for everyone to visit. A small fee to enter, 100 denar (€1.60) each, local guides are available for a donation to soak up the knowledge of Ohrid and the history of the attraction. There is also a mosque on the site and a university being built. It is very calming and well maintained, and a perfect place to sit, relax and enjoy the view. You can also enter the church and there is a small gift shop inside to purchase souvenirs. Best add the old ancient theatre and Samuel's Fortress to your walking tour, as they are all 10 minutes from each other, and all have the most wonderful views of Ohrid and full of rich history.
