7 Photography Tours in Catania That You Shouldn't Miss

September 3, 2021 Misti Hsu

Catania has been a prize of many empires over the centuries, from Greeks to Romans to Arabs to Normans to Spaniards (to name a few). But its citizens have a more dangerous enemy right in their backyard—Mount Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano, which destroyed the city with earthquakes and lava flows in 1693. Look closely at the baroque buildings dating from after the eruption—you'll notice a creative use of lava.

We loved our excursion, it was even better than expected. Our guide Pepe was very knowledgeable and kind. Before booking we were considering going up by ourselves and stop at 2900 meter but are SO GLAD we did this tour. I honestly feel it’s a completely different experience being able to go up to 3300 meters. We could hear the volcano growling and the lava spouting up but didn’t feel unsafe at any point - Pepe was great. I would say the hike was slightly more intens than expected with steep declines but as long as you’re reasonably fit it shouldn’t be an issue - it only made it more fun for us. Highly recommend!!!

This was a great trip, it is a small boat so you do need to book ahead but always check as they may have space available at short notice. The skills and knowledge of the marine biologist with us on board was great and really added to the trip. Any photos you take are useful to them as they can possibly identify individuals and so you are helping science with your trip. We did the evening trip and were lucky to see a couple of pods of striped dolphins close to the boat. As it is a small boast you are really close to them. It was lovely also to see the coast of Sicily with Mt Etna from the sea. The team are very helpful and if you are relying on public transport do contact them as they may be able to assist with their minibus.

Icredible experience! The dolphins in the Gulf of Catania are present in large groups and are beautiful, with nice colors. We observed the Stripped dolphins who socialised a couple of minutes with the boat. Just wonderful. It can tae a long time to observe them, but when you see them, you immediately forget about the waiting/searching time. The staff is very friendly and do all they can and take all the time needed to find the ceteceans. When you do the trip in the afternoon, you can furthermore enjoy a beautiful sunset with the Etna in the background. An adventure to recommend when going to Sicily!

7. Catania: the Baroque revival

Piazza del Duomo, 95100 Catania CT, Italy Etna 'Ngeniousa

Catania like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, following the devastating earthquake that destroyed the city in 1693, has been able to reinvent itself by taking on the appearance of the Baroque city that we still see today. Large urban spaces and grandiose architectural forms are the predominant aspects of this reconstruction. Starting from the inevitable Cathedral of Sant'Agata, we will then climb up to the dome of the Badia di Sant'Agata from which you can embrace the whole city with your eyes, then we will walk in Via Etnea to discover the legends that are hidden here up to the culmination of the Baroque splendor guarded by Via Crociferi.
