7 Historical & Heritage Tours in Antananarivo That You Shouldn't Miss

September 14, 2021 Janean Rudisill

Built on a narrow, rocky ridge, Antananarivo occupies a strategic point at the center of the island of Madagascar. Two forts watch over the city from the east and southwest, while within the city limits lay royal palaces, embassies, some fifty churches and a mosque. The city's most distinguishing feature may be the burnt out remains of the Rova, or Queen's Palace, situated on a prominent hill. Its steep alleys and stairways make Antananarivo a challenging but rewarding city to explore on foot.

4. Day trip to two palaces - a tale of mountain-top kings and a murdering queen!

Dadamanga Travel Service

Today we offer you a day trip to two palaces. The Ambohimanga Rova is a half day-trip out of Antananarivo. It was the home of the first Malagasy king to unite the nation, King Andrianampoinimerina. It’s a fascinating story of murders and conquering and intrigue, the local guides are skilled at telling the story in many languages, and the scenery is very special. The palace was used as a holiday home by subsequent members of the royal family until the last queen was exiled by the French colonial power and some interesting artefacts remain. Return back to Tana for lunch overlooking the city, and after lunch visit to Palace number 2, the Rova Manjakamiadana… This palace was home to the royal family until exile. It was burned in a politically motivated arson attack in 1995 and is under renovation, nevertheless it is a fascinating story, in an amazing position, with incredible views around the city and rice fields as far as the eye can see.

Inclusions: Lunch at the Grill du Rova, close to the palace, overlooking Antananarivo., All entries and obligatory local guide fees are included in your tour., One 1.5 litre bottle of water is provided for each client

Exclusions: Gratuities, We do not include snacks or personal purchases

I would thoroughly recommend Dadamanga for any trips in Madagascar. I was initially impressed by how much Brett helps people on the forum boards regardless of whether they book with him or not. After getting a few quotes we decided to go with Dadamanga due to their knowledge & Bretts helpfulness on TA and we booked a 3 week itinerary. I was highly impressed but their speed, responses, willingness to adjust the itinerary and overall communication. The tour was fantastic and it was reassuring to know we had the team available if we needed them. Roberto met us at the airport and helped us getting a SIM card for the phone, and then the following day we met Aina and Angelo who accompanied us for the trip. Both Aina (tour guide) and Angelo (driver) were fantastic, they knew when to let us sleep and relax in the car and when to talk to us and give us facts. They were always smiling and willing to help. The hotels and arrangements all went smoothly which i think is pretty amazing for Madagascar where anything can happen! The driving times were all longer than we expected and something to be aware of, but the scenery along the way is great. Towards the end of the trip I think the travelling and food caught up with me and I felt very unwell and wasn't sure what to do, Brett was able to offer some options and it was very reassuring to know that the Dadamanga team were there.

John was my guide on a small group tour of the south of Madagascar. He is a truly excellent guide. He is very knowledgeable about his country and offered valuable and interesting input throughout our trip. I never felt he was going through the motions or tuning out - quite the opposite, he was always engaged and sincere. He helped smooth out the bumps to make our trip easier and remained patient and cheerful even when faced with difficult personality traits (!). I don't think you could ask for a better guide and I completely recommend him to anyone visiting Madagascar. I agree with the other reviews that the country itself is amazing. The initial draw for me like so many others was the wildlife, and Madagascar lived up to expectations there. However, once there we experienced so much more. Diversity of scenery, landscape and vegetation, warm and welcoming people, overall excellent quality of food and lodging. Those who travel long distances should be aware the roads are often bumpy and windy, which gave me motion sickness at times. However this was no fault of our driver who was also excellent and did his best - and it was a small price to pay for an amazing experience. Highly recommended.
