In the 16th century, the city was the location of the Council of Trent. Formerly part of Austria and Austria-Hungary, it was annexed by Italy in 1919.

Pizza Dante is a lovely square in the heart of Trento, close to the bus and train stations. There is a little lake with ducks and a small fountain as well as a cafe, that also sometimes has live music. Every second week, there is a flea market that takes place from early morning until about 5 pm here.
