7 Food & Drink in Lake Maggiore That You Shouldn't Miss

May 13, 2022 Harland Bartelt

On the south side of the Alps, Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy. Since the climate is mild year-round, the area is filled with Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants. Lake Maggiore was featured in Ernest Hemingway's infamous novel, A Farewell to Arms, when the protagonist and his lover must row across the lake in order to escape the Italian Carabinieri (think police in military uniforms). Here's hoping you won't have any run-ins of that nature.

Cook on the Lakes

Cook on the Lakes is an Italian Cooking School on the Lake Maggiore, in the north of Italy. ALL COURSES HAVE HANDS-ON PHILOSOPHY! Every course has its own goals. We'll start to prepare the food all together as a group. We will know the recipes and their history, learn the basic skills, cook them. Usually all the lessons will start in the morning around 9 PM; we will work the whole morning until the food is ready and then we have lunch together; if your partners are around, they can join us for a small fee. When the course is finished, we will take pictures with your Italian cooking diploma and I'll give you a special souvenir to take home. Enjoy the location, totally surrounded by the nature and at the edge of the woods. On warm seasons the vegetables and other natural products will be available from my garden, and from the nearby local market place. If the weather is fine, we'll enjoy the food we cook outside in the garden and in the sun! See you soon!!! Francesca

Francesco is a a wonderfull host. She combines het coooking experience with a personal approach while teaching you the finesses of the Italian kitchen. She, and her husband, make you feel at home in their beautiful house and garden. We chose the regional recipes and Francesca included our special wish for a soup. Francesca, thanks a lot for a magnificent and tastefulll experience. If you are on a holiday near Lago Maggiore or Lago d’Orta you should really take a cooking class at ‘Cook on the lakes’! By the way, we felt very safe because she took all corona measures seriously.

This is a great wine and liquor store in Stresa. Reuben was very nice and accommodating. He gave our party of 4 an impromptu wine tasting. I must say he was rewarded as we purchased a lot of product including wine, balsamic, truffle butter, olive oil etc. Anyway, I highly recommend La Cambusa.
