Sanctuaire Sainte Therese

The Basilica is set upon a hill, it is a very steep walk from the main train station in Lisieux. A very beautiful setting. Please note St Therese is NOT buried here, she is buried in the town at the Carmelite Convent, so please bear this in mind when planning your trip. Taxis are available to travel around the town. The parents of St Therese are buried in the Church underneath the main Basilica. The Upstairs Church is very beautiful and there is a relic of St Therese on display in the upper Church. The art work on the roof is also quite spectacular. There is no restaurant onsite there is a nice book / giftshop on the grounds. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. They made our visit very welcoming.

Les Buissonnets

If you are a devotee of St Thérèse or want to experience her story (Story of A Soul) of her childhood memories, a visit to Les Buissonnets will bring them to life. I’ve been here several times and each time I savor the life and teachings of Thérèse. It helps to read her manuscript before going for a greater appreciation. Nearby visit the Carmel on rue du Carmel and see her relics, Chapel where she served and place where she spent her last 9 years until age 24. The Basilica of St Thérèse and St Pierre Cathedral are also amazing places to experience the saints lives including hers and her father St Louis as well as her sisters

Chateau de Saint-Germain-de-Livet

A beautiful chateau, tucked away from the main roads. It was very quiet due to Covid 19 but it was nice to see it without alot of other people around. The accompanying information leaflet gave us plenty of background on the history and room by room inside. If nothing else the gardens are gorgeous to walk around on a sunny day - there are also a couple of beautiful peacocks and lovely to see all the ducks and swans in and around the moat. A very nice place to visit.

Carmel De Lisieux

Reviewed By MsIreland2 - Dublin, Ireland

We travelled to Lisieux by train from Paris, when we got off the train we headed for the big basilica up on the hill. It is very steep walk up to the Basilica so we took it slowly. When we got there we realised that St Therese is buried down in the Carmelite Church at the Convent in the town. When we got to the Carmelite Church in the town, we went in and on the right hand side of the church there is the tomb of St Therese, it is a simple Church which the Carmelite nuns use, there is also a museum attached, the Convent and also a book/giftshop are all in the surrounding area. It was like visiting a great friend getting to visit the tomb of St Therese. Her remains lie underneath the statue. There are hundreds of roses which have been left in front of the tomb. We travelled independently which I was glad about as we had the Church to ourselves and were able to spend some time praying at the tomb. St Therese parents are buried in the underground church in the main Basilica which is in a different part of the town.
