7 Bars & Clubs in Downtown That You Shouldn't Miss

November 17, 2021 Roseanne Arnett

Step to the beat of wafting flamenco music as you wander the downtown River Walk before sampling as much chili (San Antonio’s signature dish) as your taste buds will allow. A visit to the Alamo is an absolute must, as is taking in a show at the ornate Majestic Theatre. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is dotted with 18th-century buildings and features, making for an enriching excursion.

Menger Bar

Bar which has changed little since the days when Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders here.

We were in San Antonio for the evening and after a disappointing stop for a drink on the Riverwalk we decided to stop in based on previous reviews. It was great. The bartender was really busy so it was difficult to strike up a conversation but he was friendly and my drink was the best I had all weekend. The bar looks like an authentic English Pub...from experience...and not the gawdy Americanized version that they slap a pub label on and call it British. The historical background is pretty amazing and I loved the displays with the local artifacts. Would definitely recommend.

Durty Nelly's Irish Pub

Enjoy a pint, some peanuts, and world-class piano entertainment in the Alamo City. Our menu offers authentic pub fare in a genuine Irish experience on the San Antonio River Walk. Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub opened in September, 1974, and is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s in Bunratty, Ireland. The concept of the San Antonio location came from Bill Hunter, the general manager of Hilton Palacio del Rio in the 1970’s. Durty Nelly’s may be the closest thing to a genuine Irish experience anywhere on the River Walk in San Antonio. So come on down, grab some brew, and join in on the frolic and fun. Don’t forget to check out our Durty merchandise available for purchase. See you soon. Slainte! RULES The rules at Durty Nelly’s are: “only two to a stool, no talk of religion or politics, and those drinking rum may stand by themselves, preferably near the window.” And no wee ones under 21 allowed after 7PM.

Crazy fun place where there is an awesome piano player! There are peanut shells all over the floor. It is super loud in here, so you need to feel it, or it’s not the place for you!

Coyote Ugly Saloon

Great fun bar with loud music and bar staff that live to dance provocatively on the bar! Not too seedy, lots of couples and groups make and female! Ladies actively encouraged to dance on the bar, and why not! Ok, so the toilet is not the best, but the girls working the bar are real fun, good servers, and the male security were fair and respectful! If you want a quiet drink, go elsewhere, you want a fun evening, go here! To be fair, needs to be busy, if quiet would be just another bar!
