Nuanquan (暖泉古镇) is one of the GREAT places off the beaten track in Northern China. The "zhen" (China has three categories to classify settlements, village, "zhen", and town) belongs to Zhangjiakou, that will host part of the Winter Olympics in 2022, so development can be expected, it is the right time to go NOW.
Nuanquan is a village/town built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, not a touristic village, but ordinary peasants living there, you can stroll a whole day through the narrow alleys without meeting any tourists, watching typical northern China village life and have look at the beautiful details of the old buildings. Phantastic!
Yuxian / Nuanquan is a centre of the Chinese paper cutting art, the small alleys are decorated with paper cuttings.
Several mansions of former landloards and officials have been turned into small museums, so you can delve into history.
In this area of China hardly anyone eats rice, so try the special local noddle dishes ...
From Beijing Liuliqiao there are direct busses to Yuxian (蔚县, "蔚" is pronounced "Yu" not "Wei"), from Yuxian there is a local bus line to Nuanquan (10 km).
