Oregon Country Fair

Every state in the USA seems to have a country fair with tractor pulls, farm animals and deep fried desserts in the summer, however Oregon's Country Fair brings a unique style to the table. Taking place at the beginning of July just two hours south of Portland in the wooded Willamette Valley, the event includes food vendors, musical entertainment, educational areas and craft booths. What really makes the event unique is the "hippy vibe" over "farmer vibe" as seen in the many costumed and body-painted participants.

This was my second visit to the Oregon Country Fair and it was better than I remembered. Three sunny days of music, dancing, delicious food and creatively clad (and many unclad) patrons. Be prepared to get dusty and do some serious walking, we tramped over 6 miles the first day wandering one and down the trails. The layout is confusing, just chill out and if you miss the show you wanted you'll probably find something you never dreamed of.

Glad we stopped here. Amazing views with tasting room overlooking the valley.

Intimate room, large deck. Staff was very informed and friendly. One can tell they really appreciate wine.

They also serve cheese and meat trays. Grab a bottle and picnic on the patio. Difinitely put this one on your wine trail.

Wanting to kill some time, I took five of my High School buddies (all in their 60"s) to tour the museum. What a stop ! A retired Marine gave us a personal tour of the museum and man did he know his stuff ! Once he found out that two of by buddies were in the Navy, man he started in on them, he was hilarious with his stories, jokes and tales. He stayed with us thru the whole museum explaining everything.

On our way back out, we were looking at all the model airplanes in the display cases. And with our luck, the man who built all of the models was there. He entertained us for another hour with stories of the planes, his history and knowledge . . . .

It turned out to be one of the highlights of the day !

We had chosen a day that a lot of groupon people were out there. It was really busy. We paid5$ for our tasting we got to choose what we drank. We ended up going home with a merlot. Which is out of the norm for us but it was amazing. The others nothing that blew me away but good.

Silvan Ridge Winery

Silvan Ridge Winery was founded in the southern Willamette Valley near Eugene, Oregon in 1979, a time when only a handful of true believers foresaw the incredible potential of Oregon as a world-class wine region. Today our winemaking team is committed to crafting highly individualistic wines that express the nuance, grace, character and complexity the Willamette Valley is known for.

Our original destination was Sweet Cheeks but it was closed for a private event so we crossed the street and probably had a superior experience. There were 5 of us. We all tasted wines and then two of us tried another couple. All were good. I enjoyed the pinot gris best. We bought a bottle to take home and a bottle of the cabernet for consumption on the premises. There are shaded tables surrounding the building and we selected one. The facility is beautifully located and we just enjoyed the sunny day and good wine and pleasant company.

One highlight of the visit was the lady pouring the samples, Cathy I believe. She was smart and funny and trading quips with her made the visit special.

I'm not from the area, but two of us are and they were interested in returning for special events including the concert series. If I was local, I could get used to this place.
