February 13, 2018 Janean Rudisill

Spetses (Modern Greek: Σπέτσες, Katharevousa: Σπέτσαι, Spetsai, Ancient: Πιτυούσσα, "Pityoussa") is an affluent island and a municipality in the Islands regional unit, Attica, Greece. It is sometimes included as one of the Saronic Islands. Until 1948, it was part of the old prefecture of Argolidocorinthia, which is now split into Argolis and Corinthia. In ancient times, it was known as Pityoussa, and later as Petses.

Ayia Paraskevi Beach

Reviewed By Fanis M - Athens, Greece

One of the best Beaches in Spetses. However there is no restaurant there not any proper lunch/snack facilities, only a small cantina which offers coffee (only instant!!), water, colas and 1 type of Sandwich. So be prepared!
Also, it is quite far (about 30' by bus) and if you choose to go by taxi is quite expensive: 30 Euro for car taxi and 75 Euro (!!!) for water taxi.

Bekiri Cave

Reviewed By SouthAfricaConcerned - South Africa

it is a bit of a climb over rocks in the heat to access the hole to descend into the darkness. Once you descend you cannot see until our eyes acclimatize. Fortunately i was with informed people who had torches, flippers and masks. You can try and climb back the way you came once you have swum out the cave and climbed on the rocks. I chose to swim back to shore which was quite a distance for an unfit person. It is worth a visit to the cave as it is like an indoor beach. The difficulty was swimming back and as I am unfit i had to stop frequently and there are sea urchins so it was rather difficult to hold onto the rocks. I am glad I did it although had you explained to me all that was required I think i may have backed off

Bouboulina's Statue

Sailed into Spetses harbour and one cannot miss the imposing statue of Laskarinna Bouboulina - whose name has gone down in Greek history - a hero of revolution actively taking part in Greece gaining freedom from ottoman rule.
Bouboulina took command of husband's fleet when he died and joined the revolutionary underground organisation. Among the many battles she fought - was in the Argolic Gulf. In her honor on 8th Sept each year a re-enactment is held in Spetses harbour.....I think it would be a great day to visit.
Next time for me....as there will no doubt be a real party atmosphere - and Greeks do know how to party.
Island has a very rich naval tradition and much shipping wealth.
Lovely harbour restaurants, shopping, sun drenched villas, museums and great hospitable welcoming locals.
Can get to visit as day trip from athens

Being my first greek island, this one ticked all the right boxes, lots of history and not so far from Hydra, which is totally different of course!, then around the corner to Poros, which is totally different again , don't miss Epidauros, or Nafplion, or ancient Assini, or take a boat to Monemvsaia ,if you can.
