Mount Pan (Panshan)

This is another casualty in the continuing war against authenticity that China is waging. They tear down hutong to replace them with charmless shopping malls. They built tourist traps in place of historic sights (I'm talking about you Cultural Street in Tianjin).
Here they plastered a mountain with concrete to make it unnatural.
But once you get past that, the experience is still very enjoyable. At least, you can buy drinks and food at almost every stage of the climb!
We chose the difficulty: climbing to the top and going down with the Cableway. Some parts are easy, gently climbing. But near the top, there is a section comprised with very steep stairs. It took us the best part of an hour (granted, we are not in an exceptional fit).
The scenery is very enjoyable. My favorite part was the beginning, when you follow a stream until a nice fall.
Our kids who are quickly tired when we go shopping ran along the 3 hour trail, so you get the idea how happy they were.
The slight disappointment for us was when we got out of the Cableway. It arrives at the south entrance and the car was parked at the east entrance. So we had to walk uphill for 15 minutes to get to the car. There is normally a bus, but none could be seen.
So not a trail in wild nature, but a nice walk in a Chinese style place.

Temple of Solitary Joy (Dule si)

Dule Si, or Temple of Solitary Joy was first built in Tang Dynasty, and rebuilt in eary Liao Dynasty (984 AD). The only two buildings still standing till now, the Entrance Hall and Guanyin Pavillion, both have great importance in the Chinese history of architecture. If you are familiar with Dunhuang frescoes, you'll find how precious these buildings are. Such type of ancient architecture can only be seen in very few places including Dele Si, or in the frescoes. The he Guanyin Pavillion is now the oldest wooden multi-storey structure, housing the largest clay buddha figure. The building are exhilarating to traditional architecture lovers. We can see clearly how the building was structured based on complicated and firm wooden parts. After more than 2 dozens of recorded earthquakes, but she still stands firmly. We went from Beijing East Station by train, a little more than an hour on road.
