This interesting and beautiful area of red-rock hoodoos in the Dixie National Forest is easily accessible because Utah State Route 12 passes right through it - literally, since there are two tunnels! If you are traveling east of Bryce Canyon toward Zion National Park or Cedar Breaks National Monument then you can't miss it (about 9 miles east of the junction with UT63 at Bryce). There are pull-offs and parking along the road for photo-ops, educational signs about the history and geology of the area, and several trail heads. The visitor center is located on the north side of the road and has a large parking area, picnic tables and restrooms (open seasonally 9:00-6:00, Thursday-Monday in October, Friday-Monday in April, daily May-September). There are several trails in the area of varying length and difficulty. Some allow mountain bikes, horses and OHVs. We stopped for a couple of hours and hiked in the hoodoos around the visitor center and then down the paved bike trail since we had a wheelchair. It wasn't crowded on a Tuesday afternoon in mid-September, and the weather was very pleasant. The terrain at Red Canyon is similar to Bryce Canyon but on a smaller scale, so it may seem redundant if you've already visited there. However, it might be a good alternative if you're looking to avoid the crowd and entrance fee at the national park. A campground is available.

Panguitch GEM Theater is newly remodeled, in 2017, historic theater updated with a digital projector. Reel Bites Cafe, in the lobby, serves lunch and dinner with specialty toasted sandwiches, finger foods, fruit smoothies and ice cream treats. A great experience with the special touch of small town hospitality. Come in and enjoy!

Ate here while on a 1 night stay. Liked the 50's style interior, and the little cinema museum upstairs. Chose what we wanted to eat, but the waitress then said that the fryer was out of action, so I had to choose again, then that choice was out of stock, so settled for my third choice, chicken, which was fine. Food was good, and we loved the ice cream, which is made on the premises. I think we annoyed the staff by asking for a cup of tea, when they'd already brought us the bill - without asking if we wanted anything else.

OK, the family wanted a souvey of the area, All shops have "natural" stuff and sell it for "Un-natural prices". But, being this place is far from home I stopped and my wallet suffered.

Go to the Red Canyon Visitors Center. It is East out of Panguitch on HWY 12 and well sign posted.
They will set you up with a map of the area trails. There are sixteen trails. Some are foot only, one is foot and bike, some are foot, bike and horse trails and lastly some are foot, bike, horse and ATV trails. The trails range from half a mile to 23 miles, some maybe longer depending on your chosen trail.
The Red Canyon is noted for it's rock formations and of course beautiful red rocks it is touted as the 'most photographed place in Utah'.
We hiked part of the Cassidy trail No.3093 (named for Butch) and came back on the Ledge Point Trail No. 3091. It is about 3 miles round trip and fairly easy, not much elevation less than 500ft at a guess. It's sign posted all the way. It goes through pine forest and if you take the Ledge Trail you end up on a plateau with a beautiful expansive view.
There is parking and a toilet at the trail-head.
On a previous hike we did the Pink Ledges Trail No. 3074 which is easy and starts at the Visitors center. The center has plenty of parking including oversized vehicles, there is a bathroom and picnic area.

We rented a side by side ATV from Dave for a full day so we could join a group of ATVers from our campground on a backtrail tour of the area. What a blast! There were about a dozen of us and we got to see so much amazing scenery from trails that most tourists would never get to see. We were lucky enough for our group to be led by a couple of locals who know the 3,000 trail miles or so inside out. We had a great experience renting from Dave who ensured the ATV was in tip top shape before we headed out. Marc is an experienced ATVer so we had no issues at all, just a blast of a time - we were out all day so really got our money's worth. The fact that you can rent the ATV right opposite the campground (Hitch-n-Post) and ride to the trails from the campground (no trailer required) is a huge bonus. Dave will even take you/your group out on guided tours if you wish, especially if you aren't experienced, so don't let that hold you back. Panguitch is about 25 mins from Bryce Canyon - a cute little historic town right by all the best trails - you'll avoid the touristy crowds and get to enjoy the trails and scenery with a local. We were perfectly safe and also got to see wildlife - pronghorn, deer, cows, goats, chipmunks, squirrels etc - awesome day. JUST DO IT! PS. The green machine we rented is a high end, new machine and Dave is understandably selective about who he rents this to - experienced and responsible ATVers only (preferably with grey hair we suspect! So we qualified LOL)
