Spent 5 days doing the Montana Dinosaur Trail and while we loved them all, this one was extra Fantastic! The front desk gentleman /paleontologist (and Bobcat!!) was extra helpful explaining things to us and made it more personable. Both museums in Malta were great!

Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge

Reviewed By J2636SNcynthiaw - Freeland, United States

This Refuge is 1 miles East of Malta, Mt. Malta has lots of Motels and RV campgrounds if you want to stay near. This is a 12 mile Auto Tour. Entrance Lat/Long is: Lat: N 48°23.558` Long: W. 107° 44.187`. There is a Brown Gov. sign on US 2 but you are driving S. where several roads intersect and you may get unsure where to turn. About 3 miles after you turn S. off US 2, you will come to another Gov. sign that gives you directions. As always, a refuge changes with time of day, weather, and the season. We visited at 2 PM, (May 25th). Lots of the ponds next to the road you are driving on were dried up. The few ponds that had water were active with different birds, even in the afternoon. You drive through many different areas, prairie, grasslands, shores, ponds. I had low expectations due to the time of the day, but left very pleased. Many birds are out of your viewing area at the lake shores, but when the ponds or ditches were filled with water, near the road you are driving on, there are birds. A car came at me, even through this is a narrow road, and a service maintenance truck came up FAST behind me. Just saying, pay attention because there may be other vehicles on the road. TIPS: This is a long auto tour, probably not suited for small children. NO restrooms along the tour or picnic areas. Take water and snacks. This is a good maintained gravel road but 25 MPH is quite fast. Take binoculars and with a camera you will need a long lens.
