The Vintners Drop

Reviewed By AucklandTraveller - Christchurch, New Zealand

There’s nothing to do in Kurow so how lucky we were to find The Vintner’s Drop, a wine tasting centre featuring the very good quality wines of Ostler Caroline. Run by the very knowledgeable and charming Jim, it allows you the opportunity to taste their whole range of wines from their Pinot Gris and Riesling to their award winning Pinot Noir. Crostini platters are also available but we didn’t try them. Well worth a visit but try to arrive before 4pm...

River-T Wines

River-T Estate Wines cellar door is open 7 days, 10am to 6pm (August until June) . Sit on the deck and enjoy a local wine or beer and take in the views of the vineyard and mountains beyond. On colder days warm yourself by our log fire. Wine tastings and beautiful platters packed with local seasonal produce make this a very popular place to visit. There is even a platter for children. On the menu we include bagels ,nachos, soups and salads depending on the time of year. We have the largest selection of Waitaki Wine in the world. All of them are available by the glass or bottle. A wide range of local craft beer is also on offer. If you are just after a cup of coffee or tea, then our barista will happily make you one. 45 minutes from Oamaru and 1 hr 30 from MT Cook .

We were a group of 12 doing the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail. This is a MUST stop. Do not judge a book by the outside. The inside of this place is superb. Very welcoming (yes they even welcomed cyclists in cycle gear!), knowledgeable, engaging and we would have stayed for hours. The wine was good too ha ha. The food looked great and wish we hadn't stopped at the crappy cafe in Kurow 10 minutes before. Although the reason we did as most places we had come across in Twizel/Ohau were closed due to lack of staff and we didn't want to take the risk! I suggest you take this risk. It is NOT on the Cycle Path so if you see a building with WINERY on it, then head that direction down the highway about 100m. Thanks guys for your hospitality and good luck with the venture. Frank at Tokarahi Huts wants to stock your wine so hopefully he has been in touch!

Knowing Kurow well back during the building of the Benmor Dam, decided to take a drive up there. Very friendly staff, and the museum is well worth a look.

Been coming up to Lake Aviemore for freedom camping for years. The lake changes depending on the wind direction. very beautiful picture if the lake is flat. Certainly worth a stop and look if driving past on the main highway from Otematata or Kurow.

Definitely worth a stop and look at this dam and lake. Not maned any longer but a very historical dam and area. Defined area to stop your car and written info at the look out.
