Lee Richardson Zoo

Reviewed By jnpgc - GARDEN CITY

It is obvious that this is a zoo that cares deeply for the animals entrusted to its care. The exhibits are large and airy - no tiny cages! It is a very walkable zoo with additional information available through cell phone tours. To top it all off, the zoo is free to walk in. If you have less time or someone who has trouble walking, you can pay a small ($5) fee to drive through the zoo and see at least 2/3 of it from the car.

The Big Pool: World's Largest Hand Dug Swimming Pool

Reviewed By Gloria A - Garden City, Kansas

Having recently moved to Garden City we are taken back by this gianormous pool and how cheap it is for the residents here! Seriously--- a dollar gets you an all day pool fun day. The do a good job of keeping it up with modern slides and cosmetic appeal. The down side of this pool is that because it is sooooo very large the water is never really warm...even of the hottest days. They only open it on hot days and when school resumes it shuts down quick. At one time they used to run boats on this thing so when I say big.... expect it!

Escape The Clock

While visiting family for the Thanksgiving holiday, we came to Escape the Clock and tried the Alice room. OMG, we had so much fun. You are placed in a room and given clues to pen different boxes to the next clue. Don’t worry though, if you get stumped, they will give you clues to help you out.

You have an hour to solve the room and there are several to choose from. Afterwards, you sign the wall, and yes it’s with a sharpie, on the real wall . I’m super excited to go back and try another room, I think it will become tradition.

Sandsage Bison Range

Reviewed By Bat M - Berkeley

We kind of stumbled on this activity during a 5000 mile roadtrip. It is a State-sponsored facility, started in 1905, that protects a small herd of native buffalo on the natural Kansas plains. The manager, Tom Norman, is an extraordinary individual who works long hours making sure the animals are protected. When he saw us looking in at the facility's under-renovation building he immediately took us under his wing, stuffed us in his Chevy Suburban, and took up out on an hour tour of the bison herd in their natural habitat. He was extremely knowledgeable and totally dedicated to the preservation of the animals and their natural environment.

They are sponsored by the State of Kansas but, as are all state government activities, are always in need of supplemental funding. We've initiated a membership into the Friends of Sandsage Bison Range and have sponsored one of the cows who just calved a day before our visit.

We would recommend a visit to this facility for anyone who is interested in nature and preserving the environment.
