Elbasan (Albanian: Elbasan or Elbasani) is a city and a municipality in Elbasan County, central Albania. The third largest city in Albania, it is located on the Shkumbin River in the District of Elbasan and the County of Elbasan. The present municipality was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Bradashesh, Elbasan, Funarë, Gjergjan, Gjinar, Gracen, Labinot-Fushë, Labinot-Mal, Papër, Shirgjan, Shushicë, Tregan and Zavalinë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the city Elbasan. The total population is 141,714 (2011 census), in a total area of 872.03 km. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 78,703.

The castle was initially built by the Illyrians more than 2 thousand years ago. Then it was occupied and rebuilt by the Romans as it was an important stop in Via Egnatia connecting Durres with Constantinopol. Was destroyed by an earthquake then to be rebuilt again by the ottomans in the 15th century. It was also surrounded by a canal of water at that time for protection. The castle is in need of renovation though and more excavation is needed also in the eastern and western walls to make them acsesible. Inside the castle walls is full of house and there are and old mosque and an old church both worth visiting. Recently there was another castle discovered in Elbasan not far from this one with the same planimetry but smaller which is thought to be built during 17th century

En Elbasan, a pesar de ser la segunda ciudad de Albania, no hay Centros Comerciales, este se supone que es una aproximación a un centro comercial, posee un supermercado, almacenes varios en las plantas superiores de objetos de calidad regular, accesible mediante un sistema de transporte gratuito desde la ciudad hasta el centro comercial ya que está ubicado en la ruta que ve desde Elbasan a Tirana.
