We were passing through Belfort en route to somewhere else so didn't take the time to hike up to see the lion in situ. But, even from below seeing the fortress on top oi the mountain overlooking the town with the monumental, red stone lion crouching at the foot of the ramparts was quite impressive. Driving into the old town area was also an experience. The road brings you through the massive old stone defense walls via bridges and ornate gates. The main square outside the city hall is a great place to find a cafe and make a pit stop for a cuppa.
